Good stuff from Sister District, whose “mission is to build enduring progressive power in state legislatures. We do this by supporting candidates, mobilizing volunteers, empowering lawmakers, and educating voters.”

Sister District to Invest Record $671,000 in 2025 Virginia House of Delegates Races

More than half already with candidates, and at least 65% to be delivered by September 1

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sister District announced today that it is making its largest-ever investment in Virginia’s House of Delegates, committing a minimum of $671,000 to support Democratic candidates in the 2025 election. More than half of that support has already reached candidates, and the organization plans to disburse 65% of its total investment by September 1—well ahead of the final sprint to Election Day.

This historic investment reflects Sister District’s deep commitment to protecting and expanding Virginia’s narrow Democratic majority in the House, which currently stands at just one seat.

“This is the most ambitious House of Delegates investment in our organization’s history,” said Executive Director Sarah Curmi. “The stakes are high in 2025—from safeguarding abortion access and voting rights to defending against MAGA extremism. That’s why we are putting resources in candidates’ hands early, so they can build powerful campaigns that reach voters when it matters most.”

Sister District’s investment includes direct cash contributions, as well as strategic in-kind support such as digital advertising, voter outreach, and volunteer mobilization. Cash contributions are donated directly to candidates by Sister District’s network of more than 100,000 grassroots volunteers.

The organization is supporting fifteen general election candidates in competitive districts across the Commonwealth, focusing on races that will determine control of the House. They also supported JJ Singh and Kannan Srinivasan in winning special elections to defend the Democratic majority in the state Senate earlier this year.

In 2023, Democrats flipped the Virginia House and held the Senate, forming a crucial blue firewall in the South. But with anti-democratic forces mobilizing for 2025 and beyond, Sister District is doubling down.

“The road to 2026 runs through Virginia,” added Curmi. “We are thrilled to make an unprecedented investment in this fight.”

Sister District is a grassroots organization that aims to build enduring progressive power in state legislatures across the country to improve people’s lives and support Democrats by filling critical strategic gaps at every point in the political life cycle
