Webb and Warner Vote for Cloture, Republicans Still the “Party of No”

Thank you to Senators Webb and Warner for voting the right way – “aye” on the Defense Appropriations bill – a few minutes ago. Unfortunately, Mitch McConnell and Company continue to be the “party of no” who want everything to fail. Between talking down the U.S. economy, voting against funding our troops in “harms way,” supporting continued bigotry in the military, blocking the Obama tax cut for the middle class in order to give millionaires and billionaires a huge gift, preventing young people from getting an education and serving in our military, opposing clean energy and climate action, etc. the question is why anyone in their right mind would vote for them. Even if you’re not happy with the Democrats, even if you’re really pissed off, staying home on election day is not a serious option. The alternative is to turn the government over to McConnell, Can’tor, BONEr and their ilk. No thank you.

P.S. Great comment by emptywheel on Twitter: “Remember when Senators holding up Defense bill were branded as anti-American and unpatriotic?”

The folks who have carped about Jim Webb lately need to realize how difficult it was for him to vote the way he did. He is through and through a Marine. This took political courage on his part. I admire him even more than before.

The two Democrats who joined the Party of No were Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor. Doesn’t surprise me. Bot will do anything to get cover for fall elections.

    She’s a Democrat … you have to love her … don’t you???

Although the vote failed, I want to thank Webb and Warner for voting.

As to the question of why do republicans hate the military, that is simply a continuation of everything they have done all along. They vote to fund their corporations, not to fund the military.  They vote against troops and their families. They vote against veterans too.

But when a big biz corporation wants money – that they vote for. So killing the military authorization bill is one thing, voting for the active duty troops and veterans is another. They know their corporations will put the finger on the Dems to get their money they “know” is theirs and not ours.

I look forward to the day when we have a powerful Majority Leader again.  With “let’s take a vacation” Reid talking about going on vacation early rather than stay in session it is easy to dream for when he is gone.

There is little more to add about the failure of Obama, his administration and Congress to bring equality to American military forces.  Although the polls have shown a large majority of Americans think it is OK to allow gays to be out in the military, those listed above have nothing to show because they really did nothing.  My guess is they are afraid of teh gay.

Mother Jones article is a good read.
