The Second Amendment is not a suicide pact and does not grant the right of individual citizens to decide that a government has become tyrannical and attempt to overthrow it with violent force.

For someone who seems to have spent a great time thinking about the Second Amendment, your understanding of its role in our Constitution is entirely absent.

    • guarantees the right of a private individual to own any “arm” he or she wants? Surface-to-air missile? Scud? Tank? Artillery? F-16, fully armed? Nuclear weapon? Chemical/biological weapon? Where are the limits, exactly, or are there none in your view?

    • this analysis (“OF GUNS, ABORTIONS, AND THE UNRAVELING RULE OF LAW”) by prominent conservative jurist J. Harvie Wilkinson III. (see here for commentary on Wilkinson’s analysis)

    • Freedom4All

This editorial openly embraces insurrectionism. As another commenter said, the Constitution was not a suicide pact. Article 1, Section 8 states that the purpose of the Militia is to “suppress Insurrections,” not foment them. And the author of the Second Amendment, James Madison, described Shays’ Rebellion as a “warning” to our young nation. Cowan, you might also want to study up on how George Washington – the man who led our troops in the Revolutionary War – responded to the Whiskey Rebellion.

Our Founders understood that any opposition to federal tyranny would be countered by a well regulated Militia “officered by men chosen from among themselves, fighting for their common liberties, and united and conducted by governments possessing their affections and confidence.” Not by some individual NRA members who think they have a “right” to shoot and kill our elected officials when they feel “oppressed.”

And none of our Founders had any problems whatsoever with the states exercising their police power to ensure public safety.

It’s this kind of extremist thinking that has led to gun violence which takes the lives of more than 800 Virginians every year. Enough.

    • Several questions, so far no answers. Interesting.
