For those who don’t believe that Trump is at least an authoritarian/despot-wannabe, at at worst a fascist, check this out from the Director of Programs at Appalachian Voices. As one commenter puts it, this is “[t]he electronic equivalent of burning books!” (UPDATE: I just checked the EPA’s Twitter feed, and it hasn’t been updated since the day before Trump was inaugurated. Same thing with the EPA’s Facebook page. On the EPA website, there have been no news updates since Inauguration Day.  Also, nothing since January 19 on EPA’s YouTube channel, and nothing on its Instagram page since a final photo of President Obama and his EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. So, yeah, as far as I can tell, nothing’s coming out of EPA, at least so far, under the Orange Fascist administration.) (UPDATE #2: See Vox’s What the hell is going on at the EPA right now?) (UPDATE #3: Also see Trump bans EPA employees from giving social media updates and EPA science under scrutiny by Trump political staff and Trump administration reviewing EPA website, curbs agency communication and Trump’s Team at EPA Vetting ‘Controversial’ Public Meetings and Presentations, etc, etc. There are tons of articles on this…)

For those wondering if what’s going on inside the EPA is as bad as it sounds, here’s an account someone inside the agency gave to a friend of a friend:

“So I work at the EPA and yeah it’s as bad as you are hearing:

The entire agency is under lockdown, the website, facebook, twitter, you name it is static and can’t be updated. All reports, findings, permits and studies are frozen and not to be released. No presentations or meetings with outside groups are to be scheduled.

Any Press contacting us are to be directed to the Press Office which is also silenced and will give no response.

All grants and contracts are frozen from the contractors working on Superfund sites to grad school students working on their thesis.

We are still doing our work, writing reports, doing cancer modeling for pesticides hoping that this is temporary and we will be able to serve the public soon. But many of us are worried about an ideologically-fueled purging and if you use any federal data I advise you gather what you can now.

We have been told the website is being reworked to reflect the new administration’s policy.

Feel free to copy and paste, you all pay for the government and you should know what’s going on. I am posting this as a fellow citizen and not in any sort of official capacity.”

Can you verify that this information did indeed come from an EPA staffer?

    • I trust the person who posted this.

      • jonathan latham

You are the person who posted this, no?

        • Yes, I’m the person who re-posted what I read on my friend’s Facebook page here on Blue Virginia. Question?

          • Jenn Daru

Does your friend know who originally wrote it? I’m dying to repost it but can’t find any shred of evidence it’s real. God forbid I don’t have a supporting link lol

          • Jeff Hansen

I just read it as having come from a EPA worker in Grand Junction, CO. Is that where you heard it came from?

          • Not sure, but presumably the “friend of a friend” (referenced in the Facebook post) would know.

I’m with you–“here’s an account someone inside the agency gave to a friend of a friend:” doesn’t cut it for me. I know things are really, really bad, but we need to not succumb to believing whatever we see that fits our perspective. Verifiable facts are our friend.

      • Normally, I’d say that’s a fair point, but these aren’t normal times, and this info is totally consistent with how the Trump thugs are behaving and with everything else I’m hearing in the news, from federal workers, etc. In other words, there’s no particular reason not to believe it…

        • James Cumberland

the reason it might be questioned is because it’s too easy to make this stuff up for click-bait. Trump supporters bought into Pizzagate because they didn’t do their research. Unless there’s a credible source, this cannot be something we latch onto. That is inviting blowback.

          • cafe_sonja

Check the EPA facebook, twitter and website pages. No posts since January 19th. Also verified in several places there has been a mass archiving on the dark web of EPA documents. I think that’s enough, don’t you?

“Normally, I’d say that’s a fair point, but these aren’t normal times”

      • There are a million articles on this. I’ve linked several of them in updates to the article I posted. There’s no doubt this stuff is going on all over the government…

  • Cstromby

Could have been said by anyone, and could literally say anything.
I believe it, and I get why someone wouldn’t want their name tied to it if it is genuine, but without any source, it has no reliability. And some dude saying “I trust the friend who passed it on to me from their friend’s friend’s person they know” doesn’t make something credible.
And “no reason not to believe it” isn’t evidence.

    • See my updates in the post; I checked EPA’s website and social media accounts, and there have been no updates that I can find since Inauguration Day.

      • Cstromby

I do not dispute the content of the message. I dispute the notion of it being a quote of genuine origin. Specious attribution and unverifiable lay of sources, even on info that seems accurate, only serves to undermine a position and message. See Jeff’s stupid post a few minutes ago: There is no ground to contradict him here, because there’s nothing to indicate this isn’t in fact a fake chain email, even if its content is close enough to true (or what satisfies our preconceived notions and inferences as true).

        • The right wingnuts are going to claim “fake news” about anything they don’t like. Nothing we can do about that, as far as I can tell.

    • bardgal

Seven Hells…. are you too internet challenged to go LOOK at the evidence yourself? They haven’t taken down the sites, they still exist – but no one is posting …. why do you suppose that is? Especially considering those sites have been constantly updated regularly in the past – until now. Go on…. make a list of all the reasons YOU would believe these sites have all gone quiet, and knowing what Trump/GOP policies of ignoring science and facts are.

      • Exactly, but some people won’t believe what’s right in front of their own eyes if it conflicts with their blind partisan loyalty. Sad!

  • Jeff Fandl

Fake news being passed around again by biased non-reporters…..the made up crap like this just won’t stop!

  • Jeff Fandl

Your are blinded by your bias and ignorance lowkell. So your only recourse is to spread fake propaganda….it’s more sad than dangerous

    • So you’re arguing that there has NOT been a clampdown at EPA, despite tons of evidence that there has been? Gotcha. As for the EPA person quoted, are you seriously suggesting that they should reveal their real name, given the likely repercussions in the age of Trump, Bannon et al? To the contrary, this is exactly the type of scenario where use of anonymous sources – something I usually am not a fan of – is 100% justified.

    • Tiffany P
      • Yep, there are tons of articles on this. Only someone blinded by bias (towards Trump) and ignorance would deny that this is happening. Sad!
