Donald Trump Is Trying to Raise Taxes on Virginians. Will Ed Gillespie Finally Stand Up to the President?

Just Like Gillespie, Trump Has Proposed a Tax Plan That’s Good for the Rich — at the Expense of the Middle Class

Donald Trump’s tax plan is finally out — and it would have a devastating impact on Virginians. According to a new report by Americans Against Double Taxation, Trump’s proposal to eliminate income and sales tax deduction would mean a $864.26 tax hike for middle-class homeowners in Virginia.

Virginia taxpayers would be among the hardest hit by Trump’s tax plan. So far, Ed Gillespie has not come out against Trump’s proposed middle class tax hike on Virginia.

The President’s tax plan poses an almost existential challenge for the Gillespie campaign. Gillespie’s entire candidacy has been based around two pillars: allegiance to President Trump and massive tax cuts for the wealthy. Yet the Trump proposal effectively raises taxes on Virginians — something Ed Gillespie has said he is adamantly opposed to. Gillespie has refused to break with the President on any major policy proposal — including Trumpcare and the Muslim Ban.

Gillespie may be silent on the Trump proposal because it bears a striking resemblance to his own tax plan. Trump’s proposed elimination of the income and sales tax deduction would likely cause a “backdoor hit” on revenue that would trigger cuts to public education and health care. Independent analysts have found that Ed Gillespie’s tax plan would create an approximately $1.4 billion hole in the Virginia budget — and also trigger stark cuts to education and health care.

“Is Ed Gillespie so beholden to Donald Trump that he won’t even oppose the President’s plan to raise taxes on Virginians?” said DPVA spokesperson Kevin Donohoe. “This is a moment of reckoning for Gillespie. Will he finally stand up to Donald Trump and denounce the President’s effort to raise taxes on Virginia’s middle class — or will he once again stay silent? For decades, Ed Gillespie has claimed he cares about lowering taxes. He should prove it and speak out against Donald Trump.”

  • New Democrat Coalition Statement on GOP Tax Plan

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Republicans released their one-sided tax proposal. New Democrats have continued to offer to work with House Republicans on a truly bipartisan tax reform plan, but instead Republicans Leaders chose a partisan path that excluded Democrats and many of their own members from the negotiation process. In response, key Members of the New Democrat Coalition released the following statement:

“Our country is in dire need of a modern tax code that supports middle-class families, fosters business development, is globally competitive, encourages innovation and creates opportunities for Americans to prosper in a 21st-century economy. In today’s bill, Republicans laid out a plan that avoided many hard choices, and will explode our national debt by trillions of dollars. Not only does this plan saddle our children and grandchildren with the massive cost of unpaid-for cuts, but by eliminating key deductions like the state and local income tax deduction, medical and student loan expense deduction, and capping property tax deductions, Americans across the country will see their tax bills increase.

“We all want lower taxes and a simpler tax code, but lowering taxes for those who need it least without paying for them and ballooning the national debt is flat-out irresponsible. The New Democrats are ready to sit down and make the hard choices to exact true tax reform, but that requires a bipartisan process and open negotiation.”

This statement is supported by New Democrat Coalition Chair Rep. Jim Himes (CT-04) and New Democrat Coalition Tax-Reform Co-Chairs and New Democrats on Ways & Means Reps. Ron Kind (WI-03), Terri Sewell (AL-07), Suzan DelBene (WA-01), Don Beyer (VA-8), and Brad Schneider (IL-10).

  • Ralph Northam Condemns President Trump’s Latest Move to Repeal the Affordable Care Act to Pay for Tax Cuts for the Rich

Richmond, Va. — Yesterday, President Donald Trump stated that he supports partially repealing the Affordable Care Act to pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. Trump once again called for the repeal of the Affordable Care Act — which would dramatically raise costs for Virginians and throw thousands off their health insurance. As Vox reported this morning, expanding Medicaid for 400,000 Virginians and ensuring access to quality, affordable care has emerged as a top issue for Virginia voters this year.

Dr. Ralph Northam today released the following statement in response to this latest effort to destabilize the Affordable Care Act and lower quality of care and coverage for millions of Americans:

“Taking healthcare away from millions of Americans to give a massive tax cut for the rich is unconscionable. President Trump’s latest effort to gut the Affordable Care Act will make healthcare more expensive and cause millions to lose their health care. In short, it will be a disaster for working families and create unprecedented chaos in the health insurance market. The President has once again proved that he has little empathy for working Americans — and is more interested in scoring political points than helping working families.

“Virginians are already suffering from President Trump’s efforts to sabotage our health care — and in the coming months, thousands in our commonwealth are set to lose their health insurance. Health care is a right — and our leaders must stop playing political games and come together to build upon and improve the Affordable Care Act. That’s why I strongly support expanding Medicaid and ensuring that 400,000 Virginians have health care and why I have urged our leaders in Washington, D.C. to come together to improve and build on the Affordable Care Act — not gut it.

“I urge Ed Gillespie to join me in standing up for Virginia families by firmly rejecting this latest attempt to take health care away from thousands. But I’m not holding my breath. For too long, Gillespie has done nothing while Donald Trump has desperately tried to take health care away from thousands of Virginians. And just like Donald Trump, he has proposed massive tax cuts for the rich that would leave a $1.4 billion hole in our budget — and trigger cuts to health care.”
