Delegate Hope's Response to Bishop Loverde's Remarks on Gay Youth in the Boy Scouts of America

by: lowkell

The following remarks by Del. Patrick Hope are in response to the statement by Bishop Paul Loverde, the leader of the Catholic Diocese of Arlington, who said "the vote would likely force the diocese to reconsider sponsoring troops in about 50 of its parishes." It goes without saying that I strongly agree with Del. Hope.
Delegate Hope's Response to Bishop Loverde's Remarks on Gay Youth in the Boy Scouts of America

Arlington - As a Catholic, I am offended and deeply disappointed in the leader of the Catholic Diocese of Arlington County, Bishop Paul Loverde's statement that the Boy Scouts of America's vote would force the diocese to reconsider sponsoring troops in about 50 of its parishes.

The decision by the Boy Scouts of America to allow openly gay youth to participate is in direct line with the teachings of Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church.  Bishop Loverde's statement is made out of fear and ignorance and should not be tolerated.  I hope and pray the Bishop will reconsider and continue to support Boy Scouts of America.

Patrick A. Hope is a Member of the Virginia General Assembly as the Delegate from the 47th District representing part of Arlington County.  He serves on the Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee and House Health, Welfare, and Institutions Committee.

Disappointed (0.00 / 0)
Bishop Loverde's statement is disappointing, if not entirely surprising and, like Del. Hope, I hope on further reflection he reaffirms the Church's support of BSA Troops and Packs.

I am Cub Scout leader, with one son in Cub Scouts and another in Boy Scouts, and I believe the BSA position on sexual orientation is really (and unnecessarily) hurting a terrific organization, particularly in areas like Arlington.  I think the new policy is a step in the right direction, and I am hopeful that it is simply the first step towards removing sexual orientation from the criteria for membership in BSA.

That having been said, I think that in the short run BSA is in a very difficult position, since no matter what they decide to do, they will offend large numbers of their members, and potentially drive them out of the organization.  I do not envy those in charge of making these decisions for BSA.

Unsurprising (0.00 / 0)
If only the bishops had shown this kind of fervor in rooting out child molesters. As it is, theses guys have no moral authority whatsoever.

Like independent, I was raised in the church. I try to carry the best of it with me, but I have nothing contempt for the institution.

Another reason to disavow the Catholic Church (0.00 / 0)
I was raised Catholic, went to Carholic school for 12 years, even got married in the church because I knew it would be importantl to my mother. Every time I read one of these offensive statements by a Catholic bishop , priest, and even the Pope, it reinforces my decision to leave the Church. This is especially rich coming from an organization which enabled and covered up for pedphlies within their ranks for hundreds of years.
The only time I enter a Catholic Church is when I attend family weddings, funerals, or christenings. I have raised my kids with only the basic teachings of Jesus Christ, and told them they can choose their own religion when and if they decide to, or feel free to practice no religion at all.

Del. "Sideshow" Bob Marshall's tirade against Boy Scouts' decision (0.00 / 0)
from his Facebook page. What a nut.
Manassas, VAI am deeply saddened by the damage that the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America has done to itself and to scouting by changing membership rules to allow openly homosexual scouts.

In bowing to the demands of CEO's from wealthy, pro-homosexual foundations and corporations which fund scouting, the National Council may have protected its finances in the short run, but it has rejected the original reasons for scouting -- to help teach boys how to become moral men. Those days are gone.

I was a Cub Scout as was one of my sons. We enjoyed and benefited from the emphasis on character development which included self denial, not self justification.

And by Scoutings own standards, this decision fails. The decision of Boy Scouts of America to allow openly homosexual scouts in its ranks is in conflict with the Scout Law to be clean and reverent, as well as Scouting's Oath "to do my duty to God" and to "keep myself ... morally straight."

Therefore, I applaud Arlington Diocese Catholic Bishop Paul Loverde, who lamented that "As an organization founded on character and leadership, it is highly disappointing to see the Boy Scouts of America succumb to external pressures and political causes at the cost of its moral integrity."

Homosexual groups previously and unsuccessfully sued the Boy Scouts of America all the way to the US Supreme Court in 2000 which held that Scouts can define their own association's standards. It would be surprising indeed if the National Council would not follow this shameful action with an embrace of homosexual scout leaders. Sadly, the National Council has now grasped defeat from the jaws of that important victory.

Bishop Loverde has stated that the Arlington Diocese cannot and will not compromise Catholic moral teaching. Some Catholic dioceses and parishes may try to run their own version of Boy Scouts -- trying to avoid entanglement in the moral confusion displayed by Scout leaders. However, they will be under the constant threat of homosexual activists threatening litigation. I do not see how it could work.

Homosexuals and their supporters who urged this change claimed to be promoting "tolerance," but that is never their goal. They are completely intolerant of those who resist them. Homosexuals were free to have created another scouting organization, but they wanted ours. Well now, they have it, or what will be left of it. It is a sad day for America.
