Jeff Schapiro gives us a quick review of Virginia’s history as a state that’s unfriendly to organized labor. Today, as Schapiro points out, so-called “right to work” (Leslie Byrne far more accurately called it the “right to be poor”) is an article of faith among Virginia Republicans and (many if not most) Virginia Democrats. That’s extremely unfortunate, and it puts the oft-repeated claim about how Virginia’s so “business friendly” in a much darker light than it’s usually portrayed. Not that there’s anything wrong with being “friendly” to business, but if it means being “unfriendly” to workers, that’s most definitely something that shouldn’t be happening here.
