Here are a few, carefully (actually, I drew them out of a hat – lol) selected fundraising numbers from the first quarter of 2011 for Northern Virginia races I’m following. I mostly relied on the State Board of Elections campaign finance information in preparing this. If I missed any candidates or other interesting tidbits, please let me know in the comments section. Thanks!
30th State Senate district
Alexandria City Councilman Rob Krupicka (D): $101,144 raised, $79,860 cash on hand
Del. Adam Ebbin (D): $72,989 raised, $42,415 cash on hand
Arlington School Board member Libby Garvey (D): $54,721 raised, $32,536 cash on hand
Mike Maibach (R): $0 raised, $10,000 cash on hand
Comment: Krupicka leading in both money raised and cash on hand in this safe Democratic district. Of course, Ebbin was prohibited from fundraising for most of this quarter, but still posted very nice numbers.
31st State Senate district
Caren Merrick (R): $47,085 raised, $75,894 cash on hand
Arlington County Board member Barbara Favola (D): $60,692 raised, $57,259 cash on hand
Comment: With Gov. McDonnell’s veto of the General Assembly’s redistricting plans, Merrick could end up in the 32nd State Senate district, where Sen. Janet Howell has $199,370 cash on hand. Also, it’s possible that several more Democratic candidates will be entering this race, in spite of Dick Saslaw’s attempts to “clear the field” for Favola
33rd State Senate district
Sen. Mark Herring (D): $102,712 raised, $151,514 cash on hand
Dick Black (R): $29,435 raised, $60,653 cash on hand
Comment: Black is an extremist, also is way behind Herring in money; hopefully, that will do the trick for Herring. UPDATE: I’m informed that Black has moved to the “new” 22nd district that may or may not exist – lol. Apparently, Republican Patricia Phillips will be running against Sen. Herring.
34th State Senate district
Sen. Chap Petersen (D): $89,294 raised, $210,093 cash on hand
Gerarda Culipher (R): $16,496 raised, $11,093 cash on hand
Comment: Chap rockin’ and rollin’ in Fairfax – go Chap!
37th State Senate District
Sen. Dave Marsden (D): $41,802 raised, $57,242 cash on hand
Jason Flanary (R): $17,612 raised, $46,090 cash on hand
Stephen Hunt (R): $6,938 raised, $5,278 cash on hand
Comment: This one could be a tough race in a swing district
39th State Senate district candidates
Miller Baker (R): $14,162 raised, $107,566 cash on hand
Sen. George Barker (D): $18,291 raised, $44,802 cash on hand
Scott Martin (R): $18,582 raised, $36,150 cash on hand
Comment: This one could also be a tough race in a swing district, especially depending on what happens with the Senate redistricting map
35th House of Delegates (HoD) district
Del. Mark Keam (D): $81,333 raised, $77,846 cash on hand
Brian Schoeneman (R): $0 raised, $0 cash on hand
Comment: Keam should cruise to victory easily in this generally “blue” district. Note that Schoeneman could end up in the 37th district, depending on what happens with redistricting.
37th HoD District
Del. David Bulova (D): $7,240 raised, $7,169 cash on hand
Comment: Very little money for the incumbent will he have a Republican opponent or not?
41st HoD district
Del. Eileen Filler-Corn (D): $10,677 raised, $19,480 cash on hand
Comment: Not a lot of money for the 1st term incumbent, who won by just 37 votes in a special election, but also no sign yet of a Republican challenger
44th HoD District
Del. Scott Surovell (D): $54,862 raised, $72,254 cash on hand
Comment: Surovell looking good right now – go Scott!
45th HoD District
Del. David Englin (D): $32,887 raised, $62,139 cash on hand
Comment: Englin raising good money in a safe “blue” district
47th HoD district
Del. Patrick Hope (D): $7,275 raised, $15,434 cash on hand
Comment: Not much fundraising for the first-term incumbent in the super-safe “blue” 47th district
48th HoD district
Del. Bob Brink (D): $10,284 raised, $11,400 cash on hand
Comment: Not much fundraising for the long-time incumbent in another super-safe “blue” district. It’s very unfortunate, because ideally we’d hvae Democrats from these safe districts raising LOTS of money and serving as money machines for vulnerable Dems in the rest of the state.
49th HoD district
Stephanie Clifford (D): $1,100 raised (gave herself $1,000), $754 cash on hand
Comment: Essentially no money raised for Clifford. Most likely, Alfonso Lopez will enter this race sometime soon. This well-connected Friend of Kaine’s has big-time fundraising potential.
Arlington Commonwealth’s Attorney
Theo Stamos (D): $48,228 raised, $59,621 cash on hand
David Deane (D): $5,873 raised, $5,309 cash on hand
Comment: Stamos is the far stronger candidate, outraising and out-hustling Deane. She should win easily.
