Rob Krupicka Announces for David Englin’s House of Delegates Seat

Well, that sure didn’t take long!

Less than a day after the announcement [by Del. David Englin that he would vacate his seat], City Councilman Rob Krupicka (D) confirmed he intended to run for the open seat. Krupicka ran for the Virginia Senate last year but lost the Democratic nomination to fellow Del Ray resident state Sen. Adam Ebbin (D-30).

“I’ve been pretty clear that I’m pretty interested in the policies and politics that are happening in Richmond and this is the chance for me to continue the work I started with the senate campaign,” Krupicka, also a member of the state Board of Education, said.

Good for Rob, I think he’d make a great Delegate (he also would have made an excellent State Senator, but I could never decide between Adam Ebbin, Libby Garvey and him) and will be happy to support him for this position. Go Rob!

P.S. Here’s my interview with Rob when he was running for State Senate last year.

I thought he was never running for office again?  “Krupicka’s council seat is one of two open at City Hall, fulfilling a campaign pledge to break from politics if not elected to the state Senate.”

The only promise he ever made specifically was to not run for City Council again which he made good on. It did sound as if he was going to take a longer break than he did but lets be honest, who saw this opportunity coming? Rob always had interest in getting back into politics at some point it just came faster than he thought it would.

My back of the envelope calculations have Krupicka getting 40% of the vote in the 45th Delegates district in the primary against Garvey and Ebbin. Ebbin would have won 35% and Garvey 24%. Krupicka did very well in Alexandria, winning 10 of the 13 Alexandrian precincts. I don’t know of any other candidates on the horizon, but looks like it’s Krupicka’s time.

Krupicka previously employed Shayna Englin, even while David was cheating on her.

Carter Batey, the manager of Rob Krupicka’s state senate campaign, confirmed Friday that Shayna Englin, the wife of Del. David Englin (D-45), is employed by the Krupicka campaign. … “Shayna has been working with the campaign for months,” Batey said in an email.

Did Rob know?  Did he care?

Actually, think it through.  If you’re going to cheat on your spouse, you want a “wingman” to keep an eye on her whereabouts.  Cynical but true.

Is it entirely impossible that Englin got his good buddy Krupicka to hire his wife, so Englin could get his freak on without worrying about her coming home?

Personally, I very, very much doubt it.  But in politics, perceptions matter.  Especially since Krupicka has made a big deal of portraying himself as close to Englin.

And it’s also astoundingly bad perception that Krupicka was tipped off about Englin’s announcement, so he could quickly stake a claim on the seat.  That is an open invitation to play a game of “what did he know and when did he know it”.

Krupicka may be his own worst enemy.

He is running in the 45th primary. He is on the arlington school board.      I expect a few others will run too. When David Englin ran his first race , he beat 5 better known candidates.
