Andy Schmookler is running for Congress in the 6th Congressional District of Virginia, challenging the incumbent Congressman, Bob Goodlatte.  An award-winning author, political commentator, radio talk-show host, and teacher, Andy moved with his family to Shenandoah County in 1992.  He is a graduate of Harvard University and holds a PhD from the University of California at Berkeley.

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision upholding the key provisions of the Affordable Care Act, Andy Schmookler, the Democratic nominee for Congress from Virginia’s 6th District, issued this statement:

“Now that this issue is resolved (and it should be recalled that the main bone of contention, the Individual Mandate, was originally a Republican idea, coming out of the Heritage Foundation), the Congress should turn its attention to improving upon this beginning of a reform of our health care system.

“Two facts are central here: we Americans pay twice as much for our health care as people in other Western democracies; and our system does less well at providing good care to all our people. Without any government takeover of the delivery of health care, we Americans should demand that our Congress make our system more efficient, so that health care costs do not bankrupt our families, businesses, and government; and tell our Congress also to provide a greater assurance to all our citizens that they will be able to get the quality health care they need.”

“And I hope that the Republicans –who have tried to kill every effort to reform our troubled health care system, and who did absolutely nothing to address this problem, even as it grew worse, when they controlled the government-will now work constructively to address a problem that still threatens to bankrupt our nation.”
