Virginia News Headlines: Saturday Morning

6

Here are a few Virginia (and national) news headlines, political and otherwise, for Saturday, September 29. Also check out President Obama’s weekly address, in which he “explains his administration’s steps to help the housing market, including giving responsible homeowners a chance to save thousands of dollars every year by refinancing their mortgages, but he says we need Congress’s help to do more.”

*Todd Akin Suggests Employers Should Be Able To Pay Women Less (Ah, Repubicans, gotta love ’em. Or not.)

*Rolls-Royce Romney: Commiserating with the monied masses (“When it comes to speaking up for the downtrodden, Romney isn’t just another man of the people. He is the Rolls-Royce of populists.”)

*Racism could sway the election (“Sadly, the Mecklenburg GOP’s disgusting images – which have since been removed – are not an isolated case of ugliness.”)

*Meet Dean Chambers, The Virginia Republican Who Is ‘Unskewing’ The Polls (On this subject, also see Billmon’s “Skewed polls and the paranoid style”: “A complete rejection [by conservatives] of empirical reality, and a deep conviction that said reality is in fact a conspiratorial plot by the enemies of America (a.k.a. the liberals) to poison public opinion-to win through deception what they cannot achieve openly.”)

*Will The Post be about news or opinion? (Is this column satire or serious? At first, I thought it HAD to be the former, but after reading it, I’m thinking it’s serious. And that’s not serious!)

*Jim Webb on ‘Givers’ and ‘Takers’ (Also see Romney Gets Webbed)

*Move forward on felons’ rights (“McDonnell’s efforts, however, have better aligned the commonwealth with other states that have shifted toward a model of automatically restoring rights to those who’ve completed their sentences. The next logical step, of course, would be for McDonnell to embrace such a shift in his final year as governor.”)

*GOP fires Va.-based vendor after questionable registrations (Slimy.)

*Norfolk’s Northam considering ’13 LG bid

*Campaigning with Allen, McCain regrets ‘bad vote’ on budget (Hahahaha. Whatever. Now GET OFF MY LAWN!!! Ha.)

*Special election set to fill Norfolk legislative seat

*Emails: VDOT closed crossings over internal dissent

*Reston Zoo director guilty of drowning wallaby (Appalling, this sadistic animal abuser should be in jail a lot longer than 30 days!)

*Eugene Delgaudio, Loudoun County embarrassment (And, of course, he’s a Republican.)

*Nationals vs. Cardinals: St. Louis scores early, often in 12-2 win over Washington (“Even if the Nationals suffered their largest margin of defeat this year, the Atlanta Braves’ loss to the New York Mets reduced the Nationals’ magic number to two.”)

P.S. Also see Bob Dole on life after losing the 1996 presidential election, for a reminder of what the Republican Party used to be (not that long ago, really). Also, what a stark contrast between the classy, serious, sane Dole and the…well, none of those things Romney.
