Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Friday, December 11. Also, check out the video and see if you think Mussolini and Trump bear a bit of a resemblance or what.
- GOP leaders to prepare for possible floor fight at convention (Ha, if it’s anything like the Republican Party of Virginia’s 2013 convention, the one that nominated Cooch, EW Jackson and Mark “Criminalize Miscarriages” Obenshain, this should be hilarious!)
- Trump’s anti-Muslim rhetoric will live in infamy in American history (“History won’t be kind to the other Republican candidates, either.” Or to anyone who supported Trump, made excuses for him, said they’d vote for him, etc.!)
- Paul Krugman: Empowering the Ugliness (“…this ugliness has been empowered by the very establishments that now act so horrified at the seemingly sudden turn of events. In Europe the problem is the arrogance and rigidity of elite figures who refuse to learn from economic failure; in the U.S. it’s the cynicism of Republicans who summoned up prejudice to support their electoral prospects. And now both are facing the monsters they helped create.”)
- Trump’s Republican rivals should be thanking him (“He makes their barely-less-crazy rhetoric and ideas seem reasonable by comparison.” So true, IMHO Ted Cruz is more extreme and crazier than Trump; Carson is a total nut; Rubio is a hard-right nutter and lightweight to boot; Fiorina is frothing at the mouth; etc.)
- Chris Christie Used to Be Against Terrorist Suspects Getting Guns
- Scalia’s raging hypocrisy: Encroaching senility, raging racism, or does he no longer give a f*ck? (This racist a**hole badly needs to be impeached.)
- Donald Trump is just this destructive: Why his incendiary rhetoric is making the world a more dangerous place
- Donald Trump ushers in a new era of pitchfork populism (“The billionaire brings the anger and fear of alienated whites out of the closet.”)
- Trump’s candidacy is scary, but something even more dangerous is happening to our politics (“‘Civil discourse’ has devolved into only the loudest being heard.” I’m starting to think that cable TV “news,” which I’ve always thought was a pathetic joke, has played a big role in all of this.)
- The Trump Effect, and How It Spreads (“The Republican rivals rushing to distance themselves from his latest inflammatory proposal — a faith-based wall around the country — have been peddling their own nativist policies for months or years.”
- Mark Zuckerberg should spend $45 billion on undoing Facebook’s damage to democracies (There’s a lot of truth to that.)
- The Supreme Court leaves politicians room to reform gun laws
- It’s official: The Bush tax plan loses trillions and worsens inequality (And this guy’s the supposedly “mainstream” or “non-extreme” Republican candidate?!? LOL)
- Fear of Terrorism Lifts Donald Trump in New York Times/CBS Poll (Of course, Trump is actually the best thing that ever happened to ISIS, but whatever, don’t try to explain that to Republican primary voters!)
- McAuliffe budget will have 2 percent pay raise for state workers, teachers
- Our view: Virginia Republicans get a choice (A horrible choice, but sure…)
- LuAnn Bennett declares congressional bid against Barbara Comstock
- McAuliffe says ‘reckless’ comments like Falwell’s could hurt economy (First and foremost, Falwell could hurt his own students.)
- 13 Republicans file for Virginia primary ballot (Hey, Jim Gilmore actually submitted his signatures — will wonders never cease?)
- Rigell joins Kaine in introducing war authorization bill
- Editorial: Let the budget battles begin
- Rep. Scott Rigell backs Marco Rubio’s presidential bid (Lovely; Rubio is a climate science denier, which means that he’d do nothing to prevent Rigell’s district from being under water within the next few decades.)
- Editorial: A case study in the need for reform (“Asset forfeiture, by which the police can seize your property even in the absence of criminal charges, badly needs reform”)
- For pointing a laser, Virginia man is charged with assault on a police officer
- In Hanover County, Va., a battle over educational freedom (“A county official wants to restrict classroom material.”)
- Kerry Dougherty: Virginia Beach will get its arena, assuming the money is real
- Chesapeake board tells Dominion it needs permit for coal ash storage (Here’s an idea; have Dominion shove that coal ash up its…yeah, you get the idea.)
- Film details extent of Virginia drug abuse problem
- Support Syrian refugees, Virginia Beach Human Rights Commission says (If Canada can bring in tens of thousands, so can we.)
- D.C. area forecast: Ignore the calendar as warmth rules; Great outdoor weekend ahead!
