Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Monday, May 23. Also, check out President Obama speaking to the White House Internship class of Spring 2016. I find it fascinating that Obama, in the closing months of his presidency (which began with “Hope and Change”), is emphasizing that progress is “incremental,” “hard,” not something that “happens overnight,” etc. All true, but sure sounds different than 2007-2008.
- Death of Taliban Leader Is a ‘Milestone,’ Obama Says
- U.S. to Fully Lift Vietnam Arms Ban, Obama Announces
- Trump conquers Fox: The conservative network will try to elect the monster it helped create
- Austria Is On The Brink Of Electing Europe’s First Far-Right President Since WWII (Scary, also bizarre that this crap is happening in a time of relatively peace and prosperity, certainly compared to 1930s Europe.)
- Trump Accuses Hillary Of Lying, Contradicts Himself In The Process
- Fighting phony ‘populism’ (“The media shows interest in personality politics but not policies that would benefit the populace.”)
- Bernie Loses His Halo (“Even progressives are criticizing him now after he’s shown a harder edge.”)
- Just What Were Donald Trump’s Ties to the Mob? (“What emerges is a pattern of business dealings with mob figures—not only local figures, but even the son of a reputed Russian mob boss whom Trump had at his side at a gala Trump hotel opening, but has since claimed under oath he barely knows.”)
- This Is What the Future of American Politics Looks Like (Not sure I buy this, but some interesting points, like “The failure of Jim Webb’s brief campaign for the presidential nomination. Webb was the only candidate who represented the old-style Democratic Party of the mid-20th century — the party whose central appeal was among white Southerners and Northern white ‘ethnics.'”)
- Kaine for veep? (Definitely still a possibility, although I think the chances of Elizabeth Warren have risen significantly in recent weeks.)
- Trump’s Scorning Of Data May Not Hurt Him, But It’ll Hurt The GOP (“His decision to limit the role of data probably won’t be the deciding factor in the 2016 election, but data organization and access are an investment in the future of the party.”)
- In anti-Trump district, Comstock keeps her distance from presumptive nominee (Clever, but we’ll see if voters believe it.)
- Surge in voter registration underscores Trump’s Virginia challenge
- Our view: Goodlatte and impeachment (Typo: should be spelled BADlatte. Heh.)
- Arlington board chair faces opposition from within her own party (Among other things, if you’re a Democrat and you can’t even pledge to support Democrats, then you absolutely shouldn’t be the party’s nominee. Same thing with Republicans, by the way…no brainer.)
- Virginia Beach farmers make products accessible for consumers who want to buy local without a long drive
- Showery today, then sudden pattern shift towards warmer, drier weather
