Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Wednesday, November 23. Also, check out that video for a reminder of everything we shortly will NOT have in the White House – class, dignity, empathy, warmth, compassion, brilliance, humor, appreciation for the arts and sciences, etc., etc. My god, this is going to be a horrible four years.
- Taking it to the states (“Democrats must focus on state and local politics — they have no other choice.” Yep, I’ve been saying this since 2005, yet Democrats continue their disastrous strategy of focusing first on the White House, LAST on state/local offices – the places where most stuff gets done, where you build your farm team, where you have MUCH more of an impact proportionally speaking, etc, etc. So stupid, and it’s been ruinous for the Democratic Party.)
- Trump is right not to go after Hillary Clinton. But it’s not his decision to make. (Yep, let’s all say “RULE OF LAW” together.)
- Trump, in Interview, Moderates Views but Defies Conventions (Look at his picks for his cabinet and other administration positions. So far, they have been mostly far-right loons or just plain loons.)
- Journalists shouldn’t try to win a popularity contest with Trump (“Reporters need to savor their traditional role as outsiders.”)
- Trump backs away from some of his campaign promises (The guy’s a pathological liar and a sociopath, I wouldn’t believe a word he said one way or the other.)
- The Middle East has some questions for Donald Trump
- What TV journalists did wrong — and the New York Times did right — in meeting with Trump (“TV journalist” is mostly an oxymoron, with very few exceptions. So is “cable news” and “network news.”)
- Experts Urge Clinton Campaign to Challenge Election Results in 3 Swing States
- Iran warns of retaliation if U.S. breaches nuclear deal
- Trump keeping ‘open mind’ on pulling out of climate accord (Gee, that is SO nice of him! LOL)
- Inside Trump’s freewheeling vetting operation (Debacle.)
- Conservatives put Trump on notice (“After the president-elect backed out of his vow to investigate Clinton, conservatives are insisting Trump stay firm on his other campaign promises.” Trump should tell them to shove it, but I doubt he will do that.)
- Mitt Romney Leads Donald Trump’s Picks for Secretary of State (That would actually be a not-horrible pick. Not great, or even good, but not horrible. And in this administration-from-hell, that in and of itself would be a small victory.)
- The 229-year-old sentence liberals hope will sink Trump (It should, but good luck getting Republicans to impeach this corrupt slimeball over “emoluments” or anything else.)
- Trump Raises Prospect of Keeping Ties to His Firms (This guy never should have run for president if that was his intent. Certainly, nobody should have voted for him unless he totally separated himself from his business dealings AND made his tax returns public.)
- How Fake News Articles Fabricated A Child Trafficking Story And Led To Death Threats For A Pizzeria (The people who do this crap are demented, but the broader problem is social media – Facebook in particular – which allows this garbage to spread rapidly.)
- Gov. Nikki Haley Accepts Trump Offer to Be Ambassador to United Nations: Source (Does this Tea Partier have ANY foreign policy experience at all?)
- Democrats won the most votes in the election. They should act like it. (“Democrats need to be an opposition party, not a minority party.”)
- The War on the Poor: Donald Trump’s win opens the door to Paul Ryan’s vision for America
- 11 things we learned from Donald Trump’s meeting with the New York Times (“This is what the president-elect says when he wants the Times to like him.”)
- The swamp won’t be drained: Donald Trump’s Supreme Court pick will almost certainly oppose campaign finance regulation (“Forget Trump’s anti-corruption rhetoric — he’s out to stack the courts with judges who love money in politics”)
- Donald Trump Will Never Make Peace With the Media (“So why would the media try?”)
- ThinkProgress will no longer describe racists as ‘alt-right’ (” We will only use the name when quoting others. When appending our own description to men like Spencer and groups like NPI, we will use terms we consider more accurate, such as ‘white nationalist’ or ‘white supremacist.'”)
- Donald Trump says that if the president does it, it’s not illegal (“Keep on draining that swamp.” Worse than Nixon? Very possible.)
- Trump’s Interior team is great for fossil fuels, terrible for the environment (“And so begins the pivot to petroleum.” Anyone who voted for Trump effectively voted to trash our planet.)
- Editorial: Time to revamp Virginia’s business booster
- Virginian-Pilot editorial: Where elections matter most (“By engaging citizens, welcoming discussion and being responsible stewards of public resources, the men and women who hold municipal office can make a more profound difference in the lives of local residents than could anyone in the Oval Office.”)
- Va.’s largest jurisdiction bracing for a dire budget year (“Fairfax County Executive Edward Long projects an $83 million shortfall after voters reject a meals tax.” Yep, this is mostly on voters who rejected the meals tax.)
- McClellan’s path to state Senate clears, McEachin submits resignation on way to Congress
- Richmond prosecutor to release findings in Mayor Jones investigation next week
- Tranquil travel weather today; a few light showers possible on Thanksgiving
