Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Sunday, June 4.
- London attack’s death toll for victims reaches seven as investigation starts
- Trump pulling out of the Paris climate agreement is great news … for China (“The US is leaving a huge power vacuum for its rival.” Yep, this is insane even beyond the climate piece of it per se.)
- America in Retreat (“The swiftness of President Trump’s transformation of America’s global image from a proud and valued leader to something more nearly resembling a whiny bully has heads spinning at home and abroad…America may be first in the eyes of the president, but in the eyes of the world it is in headlong retreat.”)
- Dowd: Trump Stomps Planet Earth (“Trump, on the other hand, has rattled the world with his crude manner, cruel policies, chaotic management style, authoritarian love-ins and antediluvian attitudes, cementing his image as the highchair king.”)
- What We Know About the Attack in London
- Trump ‘does believe in climate change’, as US ambassador to UN (What next, Trump “believes” in gravity? hats? Complete idiocy.)
- Shadow network aided Trump’s rise to power (“Long before Donald Trump promised to build a wall, ban Muslims and abandon the Paris climate accord, David Horowitz used his tax-exempt Freedom Center to rail against illegal immigrants, the spread of Islam and global warming.” This is sick, disturbing s***.)
- Donald Trump criticised for using London attacks to promote his Muslim travel ban (Which he yet again admits is a “ban” and is clearly aimed at one religious group. Doofus.)
- Fearing for her life, Iowa Democrat abandons race to unseat GOP Rep. Steve King (This is deeply disturbing.)
- The domestic terror threat from America’s right wing is on the rise — here’s why (As is this.)
- The subtle and nuanced take on climate change from Trump ally Alex Jones (Ee gads.)
- What states can do on climate change (even though we really need the feds) (If you want Virginia to take strong action on climate change and stand up to Trump’s insanity in general, Tom Perriello is your candidate for governor.)
- Bill Maher Apologizes for Using N-Word on ‘Real Time’ (Blech.)
- Alec Baldwin defends Griffin: ‘F–k them all’
- Can the West Survive Trump? (Not sure.)
- America, Get Ready for the Comey Show
- Protestors spell out ‘investigate Trump’ on National Mall
- March For Truth Protesters Demand Independent Russia Investigation
- After giving Democrats a brief scare in 2009, Northam says he’d be ‘steady hand’ as governor (There’s so much, uh, “interesting” stuff in this article, it’s hard to know where to start. For instance, Northam’s “centrist streak that made Northam a target for GOP overtures in 2009”; former VA GOP Chair Jeff Frederick’s quote that Northam “was so moderate that he was almost Republican…That’s why it was so believable that he would consider switching parties”; Northam’s claim – after previously denying any truth to these stories – that he used the possibility of switching parties in 2009 as “leverage” because was “frustrated with the Senate Finance Committee’s unwillingness to hear him out on funding requests for medical institutions in his district”; Northam claiming he had no idea what he was thinking when he voted twice for George W. Bush, etc, etc.)
- Why this Virginia Democrat, who has an MD, calls Trump a ‘narcissistic maniac’ (The reasons are two: 1) Trump obviously IS a maniac and obviously IS a raging narcissist; 2) his campaign obviously wanted some way to steal some of Tom Perriello’s anti-Trump thunder after he entered the race in January.)
- Schapiro: Herring galloping to the rescue? (“In it, an assistant attorney general signaled Herring’s possible intervention in the dispute, which could determine the survival of a Virginia tradition: a twice-a-year horse race in the rolling hills of Albemarle County that for many is more of a day of enthusiastic partying than a display of equine pulchritude.”)
- Three distinct choices in GOP governor primary (They’re all right wingnuts, the differences are mostly stylistic, such as Corey Stewart being an outspoken neo-Confederate. In contrast, Democrats have three solid progressives running for LG.)
- Virginia governor’s race ‘a referendum on pipelines’ (If you don’t want these monstrosities and/or want to tell Dominion Power where to shove it, vote Tom Perriello for governor!)
- Bryan K. Stephens: Keep Virginia’s health-care regulatory process
- The state’s delay in testing rape kits was shameful
- Editorial: Six Virginia communities try to make community college free
- A. Barton Hinkle column: A deep dive into dysfunction at City Hall
