Good for longtime journalist and Delegate-elect Danica Roem for calling out NBC’s lapses in accuracy and journalist ethics. For my part, I have found “journalistic ethics” to be largely an oxymoron over the years, for instance the frequent failure by corporate media outlets to link/credit blogs like this one. Also, I’d point to the media’s inattention to accuracy – whether factual or grammatical – and its bizarre fetish for “both sides” false equivalency as major, pretty much fatal, flaws in “journalism” today. Oh, and how about the obsession with sensationalistic, “freak show,” “if it bleeds it leads,” “hey there’s a fire somewhere!,” “horse race” coverage? In the end, I agree 100% with long-time journalist and now Delegate-elect Danica Roem that “journalism deserves better than this.” As do the rest of us.

@NBCNews: I don’t mind you using that clip but, as a news editor, the fact that you didn’t cite your source creates the perception that this video is yours. It’s not, it was shot by @Channel4News. Your digital team needs an ethics refresher.

Also, I’m not the first transgender person elected to office. There have been several transgender people elected to office. I’ll be the first in Virginia, not overall. So you didn’t cite your source and you have an error-in-fact. Journalism demands better than this.

Finally, did the news editor and copy editor both fall asleep at the wheel? If you:
1) post a video without crediting the source;
2) post the NBC logo in the corner instead of @Channel4News; and
3) report an error-in-fact;
then at least check your spelling.

As I said during the campaign, I’ll always be a reporter before I’m a politician. Quality journalism matters and I’m trying make that case in Richmond. @NBCNews is too big and too important to ignore basic journalism tenets. Cite your sources, vet your facts and edit your copy.

P.S. Also check out the following tweet exchange between Lt. Governor-elect Justin Fairfax and “Gentlewoman” Danica Roem. Great stuff; anti-LGBT bigot and soon-to-be EX-Delegate “Sideshow Bob” Marshall must be ripping the hair out of his head right about now. LOL
Thank you so much to the Gentleman from Fairfax County, my dear friend and Lt. Gov.-elect @FairfaxJustin. It will be an honor to serve with you! #FutureIsNow #FixRoute28 https://t.co/wC4GRn6YGZ
