The campaigns of Democratic nominees Donte Tanner (HD-40) and Shelly Simonds (HD-94) filed requests for recounts today in the Fairfax and Newport News Circuit Courts, respectively.
In HD-40, which includes precincts in both Fairfax and Prince William Counties, Tanner trails Republican Delegate Tim Hugo by 106 votes. In HD-94 in Newport News, Simonds trails Republican incumbent Delegate Dave Yancey by 10 votes.
Either race could determine control of the House of Delegates.
“In races with slim margins such as these, recounts ensure that every vote is counted and every voice is heard,” said House Democratic Leader David J. Toscano and Caucus Chair Charniele Herring. “Ensuring that there were no mistakes in counting these ballots maintains the integrity of the democratic process.”
The House Democratic Caucus is still assessing its legal options in HD-28, where 147 people were given ballots for the wrong House District in a race in which the current margin is only 82 votes. |
