City of Roanoke on Storm Durham Story: “The dismissal in question was not based upon anyone’s exercise of [Constitutional] rights.”

UPDATE Monday 2:25 pmSnopes says “Storm Durham’s claim that she was fired over possessing a concealed carry permit is unconfirmed and in dispute.” Snopes also says it was sent the City of Roanoke’s statement, which I first posted here on Blue Virginia (not sure what the Virginia corporate media is doing on this, but as is so often the case, we are ahead of them).

The City of Roanoke issued a statement yesterday (see below for a screenshot of their email; click to enlarge) on the Storm Durham story, which is all over right-wing media and social media. Last night, for instance, 2018 Virginia GOP U.S. Senate candidate Corey Stewart sat down with Storm Durham and wrote on his Facebook page: “Storm Durham @chelstorrm was fired by the city of Roanoke, VA and escorted out by police simply b/c she’s a gun owner. We must fight to protect our #SecondAmendment rights.”

According to Roanoke City’s statement (emailed to me by Roanoke City’s Communications and Media Officer, who said the statement was also “released to the local media yesterday”), in contrast, “Roanoke respects the Constitutional rights of its citizens and that the dismissal in question was not based upon anyone’s exercise of such rights.” Finally, I find it interesting that this story hasn’t moved out of the national, right-wing blogosphere (Townhall, The Blaze, etc.). I guess we’ll see if it does so in coming days, but I thought the story was worth noting since it’s a Virginia story and since it’s getting so much attention on the right.

I was fired today. I was fired by a Department of Virginia… Social Services the people who are supposed to be there to keep kids safe and develop families into better people for each other. I was fired today due to having a concealed carry permit. Was my gun on me? No. Has it ever been on me during my job, or visits, or anything related to work? No. When I told them that it has never been on me during work, what did they say? “How do we know that.” Search me. Do I have a criminal record? No. Do I, (yes the 22 year old blonde who is 5’2 and about 140 pounds who loves everything Disney, pink, and basic), come across as a threat to you? If you know me I’m pretty sure you’ve never been shaking in your boots due to my vary presence. But today, I was escorted by not one, not two, but three Roanoke City Police Officers to my office where I packed up months of thank you cards, and pictures of kids I’ve helped. I was escorted by officers who have been with me on visits where I placed a child with a relative due to risks, or when I was hugged by a child because they finally felt safe again. I was told to pack immediately and that I could not even use the bathroom to take a minute for myself because of my “serious safety concerns to the building.” I have a concealed carry permit. I own guns. I hunt. I target shoot. I represent Women hunters and outdoorswomen. Does that make me a criminal? Does that make me a safety risk to others? A big enough safety risk to be escorted by three Roanoke City Police officers? So scary and threatening that I need to be treated like a criminal? To be humiliated and looked down upon for owning a gun? For legally having a gun, registering that gun, and having the appropriate documentation for that gun?

The Constitution of the United States of America. The one document that has followed us for years, and will continue to be the power resource of all we do as Americans. The second amendment: the right to bear arms. The Roanoke City Department of Social Services should be ashamed of themselves. They should be publically known that they did this. That they fired a innocent, clean record, white, female, college graduate who works for a living for legally having, and owning a gun. That was NEVER on their property or in their building. A gun that was never used for evil, but as protection as I am a survivor or sexual assault. Protection for being that white, 22 year old, female. I am an American. A gun owner. And a proud sponsor of hunting across America, and I, nor my lawyers, judges, or support systems will rest until something is done. Until someone answers for punishing me and taking away my constitutional right.

    • Hopefully, Roanoke City will provide more details on exactly what they think happened here. Clearly, the stories by Storm Durham and Roanoke City don’t jibe with each other, other than that Durham was dismissed from her job with the city…

        Since there will probably be a wrongful dismissal suit, the city will not release any information and the city attorney would be apoplectic if someone even thought about it. There statement was what you would expect. They’re probably afraid an NRA lawyer will be involved. If the reason for dismissing the employee even has the appearance of having something to do with her concealed carry permit or owning a firearm, they should be. Most city’s have forms stating why an employee is being discharged which the employee signs. if she had prior employee evaluations which were favorable and had no reprimands, it would be difficult for them to say she wasn’t a good employee. Rumors can’t be used to terminate employment and that’s all I’ve seen printed. Lately, with the school shootings and people up in arms about gun ownership, there have been far too many stories where gun owners are being singled out for ridicule, etc. It’s crazy. People with concealed carry permits have to go through stringent background checks, fingerprinting, attend firearm safety classes and show proficiency on a firing range, at least in Louisiana. And it doesn’t come cheap but it is the price you pay to legally carry your concealed weapon. Like the saying goes, laws keep honest men honest.

          an excellent point. I’ve watched some friends in a somewhat similar situation that is playing itself out (unstable employee making threats, etc) and there is a lot going on behind the scenes that is not coming out in press accounts and on the parties’ Facebook posts.

            You’d be hard to deal with too if someone came in your home and threatened you with a gun in front of your children. And, then makes up a reason to lie to the judge to remove the children from his home! Yeah excuse him for being a little “hard to deal with”!

            Storm it appears you don’t know the first thing about CPS, confidentiality and the Code of Virginia. I don’t care what a former client posts you do not violate their confidentiality. This certainly sheds light on why you were fired. And you just opened yourself to a nice little civil suite. Wise up young one.

          Right now the city can’t say anything legally, so it’s all extremely one-sided from her….

          Much more like she’s a dangerous nutter but that won’t come out until the trial, or more likely it will never make it to court and the truth will never be made public.

            The city might not. But I been telling CPS supervisor about the way she was going about things. And the threats that was made. Now somebody else stud up and spoke on the matter after hearing me go on about this CPS worker that was out to destroy my home. And realized that she did the same to them. And I still have to deal with supervised visits with my children that I had custody of from the beginning.

            Again, I was just offering free friendly advice, warning about defamation, libel and slander. Her attorney will have a field day filing individual suits. Every person who repeats a statement that tarnishes her character (if not proven by factual evidence) can be sued individually for thousands.Believe me. It does happen and courts make large awards and will place liens on your property, garnish your wages, anything of value you own. I just hate to see people make mistakes that can be avoided.

          Storm Durham came to my house with her gun. And threaten me and my children then took my children from me for no reason. I called and nothing was done about her. But now another parent of different color called on her and she gone. Let’s talk about that. And yes I would love to come and explain the whole situation. That me and the mother of my two kid’s was not living together and she had a case against the mother of my two kid’s. For a kid that wasn’t mines and didn’t resign at my residence. When the police should up. They told her she may not enter my residence because the mother or the child in question does not resign with me. She then called the mother over to my house for she can have legal access to my residence.

            I don’t know her. I was attempting to warn people who are posting heresay and reposting other comments for which there is NO verifiable proof (police reports, recordings, photos) she can sue in civil court for defamation, libel and slander. Her attorney can bring a siut against EACH person who puts their name on a post. Just free friendly advice.

      If the accusations I’ve red about her having “temper tantrums” and locking herself in rooms is true and if whatever proof or accusations they had made them believe she or her boyfriend were a safety that would make sense. Same as the they wouldn’t let her use the bathroom before leaving. If someone has a history of locking themselves in rooms would u let them in a bathroom that locks?

        Go on Fred Newbill Facebook live about Storm Durham behavior and negligence. she’s being portrayed as a victim when really she is a suspect and need to be looked further into. She have taken people’s kids on the simple fact that she do not like them or like the laws they might know about. Like I said I made a complaint back in December the 11th 2017 on how she answer my house and responsibilities and was hostile and making her reports and was threatening me

    I looked for this story on the online version of the Roanoke Times on Saturday and Sunday, but they had nothing about it. What is with the RT? What was her real reason for termination. If it was because she had a concealed carry permit but was not armed, the right wing has a pretty good reason to be in a tizzy. Kenny Alexander, mayor of Norfolk and former GA member, has had a concealed carry permit for some time and has never been thrown out of the GA or the mayor’s office.

          I just looked at the Roanoke Times web site and did not see anything about it. Are they afraid to touch the story or are they waiting for the city offices to open up? Could be interesting.

            I am really curious as well. If you go to her FB page (link is above) people who claim to work with her are posting accusations that she’s been behaving weirdly and saying that’s the real reason. Impossible to know if there’s any truth to that

          She is the threat. She came and violated March 4th amendment rights and my 14th Amendment rights during her process of Investigation. She is not a hero. I complained on her December 11th 2017

        There are no police incident reports to this allegation as of yet. In the real world, they would have been summoned and she would have been arrested. Hence, it is like a totally frivolous assertion.

          I did in December 11- January 13th. I’ve gotten no replies from her supervisor and there supervisors. The news place didn’t think my 4th and 14th Amendment would make head lines. I am now forced to have supervised visitation with my kid’s because of her own personal discussions

      If you listen to her initial rant on her FB page there was a very good reason she gives for being fired but doesn’t realize it was grounds for being dismissed evidently. She says herself in her video she and a co-worker were returning to the office after a meeting when she got an emergency call about a child/family. She took the co-worker with her. She says, “what was I supposed to do, take them back to the office?” Well yeah dumb butt. You don’t endanger the lives of others and expect to keep your job.

        Also, she was on “probation”! They don’t need a reason to let you go during your initial probationary period of employment. I think she had only worked for like 4 months.

    If she is the loose cannon people claim, and people have filed complaints, a simple FOIA request may shake them loose….assuming there is no pending litigation tied to them.

    She just said check my background my credibility is not credible. But in the same matter I have rights too I never lied on the stand and under oath. Ask the judge and pull records. She stated that if she had her gun on her. The police wouldn’t have had to be called. Whale explain how she would have gotten out of shooting an unarmed man in his on home… She just don’t understand why people are coming out like this. But I been speaking out about her actions.

What does being a progressive, pro-Democratic blog have to do with any of that? Are you arguing with the statement by the City of Roanoke? If so, based on…?

She made a live feed then block me when asked to let’s meet up at the public with the news team. There for everyone rights are protected and we both be in a safe environment. Well ask her why she denied the offer? What does she have to hide. My story been covered up for to long now. Address the issue before saying she been done wrong.

    Apparently, it is now rumored that a former co-worker of Storm’s has turned over an mp3 audio recording made by a smartphone. On that recording, it is alleged that the person who fired Storm did, in fact, bring up her CWP and ownership of guns.

      Wrong, police body cam footage shows her supervisor advising officers that the person they’re firing ‘for cause’ possessed a CCP, and that she may be in possession of a firearm in her car. They were called to ensure her firing didn’t result in her returning with her weapon to the workplace. It was not the cause of her firing.
