The SD-33 nomination has now been set on the Democratic side (see press releases, below), congratulations to Jennifer Boysko on her overwhelming win today (with 82% of the vote). We’ll see who Republicans nominate tomorrow (former Del. Joe May?), then the special election is on January 8, 2019. Keep in mind that Ralph Northam won SD-33 by 35 points, so it’s “deep blue,” and that Tim Kaine won it by 41 points, but also that anything can happen in a special election. So…let’s make sure we focus and win this thing!

Jennifer Boysko Accepts Democratic Nomination for SD-33 Special Election

Herndon, VA – Democrats voted today to nominate Rep. Jennifer Boysko (HD-86) in the special election to replace Congresswoman-elect Jennifer Wexton, who will vacate her seat when she is sworn into Congress in January.

“First, I want to thank Charlotte McConnell and Sharafat Hussain and their dedicated supporters for continuing the fight for progressive values. The huge turnout is a show of strength for all of those ideals we hold dear. Now, we need to continue the momentum from this election and come together as a team to win the election in January. I look forward to expanding my efforts to ensure quality healthcare for Virginia families, protect reproductive freedom, stand up against gun violence, and invest to improve our transportation infrastructure.”

“I am honored to have such an outpouring of support and remain committed to fighting for our community,” said Boysko.

Over 2,500 votes were cast, more than double the amount that voted in the 2014 special election firehouse primary. The special election will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2019. Senate District 33 is made up of portions of Loudoun and Fairfax Counties, including Sterling, Leesburg and Herndon.

“We want to extend our warm congratulations to Jennifer Boysko for her victory in today’s Democratic firehouse primary in SD33. Through her service in the House, Jennifer has shown time and again that she is committed to expanding access to quality, affordable healthcare, to eliminating gun violence, and to growing our economy and attracting good paying jobs to the region and to Virginia at large. There is a lot of work to do over the next 52 days but what today’s turnout showed is that voters across the 33rd Senate District are fired up and engaged. We are confident that Jennifer has what it takes to be successful on January 8th.”
