See below for video of a great event today in Fairfax Station with the People for the American Way (PFAW), former Gov. Terry McAuliffe, the man who SHOULD be governor of Florida (Andrew Gillum), civil rights icon Dolores Huerta, and a bunch of great Virginia Democratic candidates. In speaking order, those candidates are: 1) Del. Danica Roem (HD13), 2) Eric Stamps (HD14), 3) Joshua Cole (HD28), 4) Dan Helmer (HD40), 5) Del. Kathy Tran (HD42), 6) Del. Lee Carter (HD50), 7) Morgan Goodman (HD55), 8) Sally Hudson (HD57), 9) Del. Ibraheem Samirah (HD86), 10) Suhas Subramanyam (HD87), 11) Jess Foster (HD88), 12) Phil Hernandez (HD100), 13) Amanda Pohl (SD11), 14) Qasim Rashid (SD28), 15) Steve Descano (Fairfax Commonwealth’s Attorney), and 16) Sterling District (Loudoun County) Supervisor Koran Saines. Also, here are a few highlights:
- McAuliffe said: “We have an opportunity for the first time in 26 years to have control of the House, the Senate and the Governor’s mansion…how about raising the minimum wage here in the Commonwealth of Virginia…passing background checks, shutting the gun show loophole down, getting rid of these high-capacity magazines; that will happen our first month in office in 2020, but it’s not going to happen if we don’t elect all of these great candidates.”
- McAuliffe argued: “This is not a persuasion election, this is a base vote turnout election; we’ve got to get our folks out, there are no statewides on the ballot, there are no federal candidates, it is 140 members of the General Assembly…We are very close in these races, I’ve seen all the polls; today I think we win it, but the election is not today…Virginia’s future for the next decade will be determined this November.”
- Gillum said: “I know y’all want to take this state back, and we need you to take this state back. But I also want you to know that Florida is watching, that the other 49 are watching, that what happens here, we believe will be a precursor to what will happen in the presidential election next year. So we need all of you to win ‘bigly’ – to borrow a term from someone I don’t admire, and I’m not certain it’s a word, but the point being is we’ve got to win in a very very big way, and I think that Virginia sits at the tip of the spear…It matters that we flip this legislature from Republican to Democratic...This election is about the people who lose when they lose these elections…So the consequences are huge, the stakes are high.”
- Huerta said: “It’s something we have to fight for — to create a society of justice. And we have the people in this room who are definitely going to do that.”
