Criminal investigation into Scott Taylor’s election fraud scheme yields second indictment

RICHMOND, VA – The ongoing criminal investigation into Scott Taylor’s election fraud scheme just got another result: a second staffer on Taylor’s failed 2018 campaign was indicted on two counts of making false statements on campaign documents.

Taylor’s campaign is still under criminal investigation for a plan a judge dubbed “out-and-out fraud” in which staffers forged petition signatures to get a spoiler candidate on the ballot. Some of the signatures were of people who had died or moved out of the district. Taylor convened staff during the summer of 2018 in his Congressional office to launch the petition scheme, and several more of his former staffers are connected.

The ongoing criminal investigation has already yielded a guilty plea. Earlier this month, a former staffer pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of woeful neglect of election duties. At the time, the Roanoke Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney, John Beamer, said that the investigation would “likely see more” indictments in the future.

“As more of his former staffers get wrapped up in this criminal investigation, the walls are closing in on Scott Taylor. At this point his claim that he’s been ‘exonerated’ is embarrassing. With more indictments likely to come, nothing could be further from the truth,” said DPVA Communications Director Grant Fox.
