Del. Kaye Kory, Fairfax NAACP Send Open Letter to Gov. Northam Calling for “Suspension or Elimination” of School Resource Officer Programs

Fairfax NAACP and Delegate Kaye Kory lead a diverse coalition in open letter calling on Governor Northam to remove cops from school and divert those funds to counselors.

Fairfax, VA– Delegate Kaye Kory (38th District) and Fairfax NAACP President Sean Perryman to Governor: Stop School Resource Officer Funding.

Delegate Kory and President Perryman led a letter signed by over a dozen organizations across the Commonwealth to Governor Northam requesting that he defund the School Resource Officer program in the upcoming special session. Kory and Perryman urge that the $9.4 million budgeted for School Resource Officers for FYI 2021 and FY2022 ($4.7 million/year) be reallocated for K-12 mental health counselors.

“We have a unique opportunity in this health and economic crisis to remove law enforcement in our schools and to add mental health support in our schools. We must replace SRO’s with school counselors now,” Kory and Perryman stated. Delegate Kory and President Perryman led a letter signed by over a dozen organizations across the Commonwealth to Governor Northam requesting that he defund the School Resource Officer program in the upcoming special session.
