Senator Mark Warner Accepts Invitations to Three General Election Debates

Accepts Invites to NOVA Chamber/NBC4, Norfolk State University, AARP/WTVR

Alexandria, VA — Today, August 5, Senator Mark Warner is accepting invitations to a series of three general election debates in the 2020 Senate election, as is tradition for top-of-ticket races in Virginia. At these debates, voters will be able to learn more about both candidates as they decide who to support in November.

Voting in Virginia begins on September 19. Virginians can check their registration status and request an absentee ballot by visiting: www.elections.virginia.gov.

“These debates are a critical opportunity for Senator Warner to continue to share his vision for the future of the Commonwealth and discuss his work to protect and expand access to health care and deliver lasting economic relief to Virginians struggling during the Covid-19 crisis,” said Warner spokeswoman Kate Waters. “Ultimately, we will see if Mr. Gade is as eager to praise President Trump’s failure to contain the virus as ‘great leadership’ in front of all of Virginia as he is at home behind the screen of his computer. Mr. Gade owes Virginians answers about why he has repeatedly undermined commonsense public health initiatives to contain the virus, and it is our hope that they will get those answers through these debates.”

Warner is accepting invitations to the following three debates:

  • The Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce and NBC4 Washington Debate– The NOVA Chamber has historically hosted a Northern Virginia-based debate for top-of-ticket general elections in Virginia, most recently in 2018 between Senator Tim Kaine and Corey Stewart. The debate will tentatively be held on September 23.
  • The Norfolk State University Debate in Norfolk – This will be the inaugural debate hosted by Norfolk State University and a TBA media partner. The debate will specifically focus on issues of racial justice and is tentatively scheduled to take place on campus on October 3.
  • The AARP and WTVR debate in Richmond – The People’s Debate is hosted by AARP and WTVR (CBS6 in Richmond) and will be held on October 13. They have previously hosted debates with Kaine/Stewart, Deeds/McDonnell, and hosted the 2014 debate between Warner and Gillespie.

Warner will also participate in additional forums and joint appearances across Virginia.
