See below for graphics of the newly posted COVID-19 numbers by the Virginia Department of Health and the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. So, at this point (9/18), in Virginia we’re at 138,702 total reported – confirmed plus probable – cases (note that actual cases, as well as deaths, could be higher, maybe even a LOT higher, based on stories like this one in the NY Times), 10,520 hospitalizations and 2,949 deaths from COVID-19. The number of reported cases went up 1,242 (+0.9%) in the latest statistics, which is a slightly faster rate of increase than the day before, when reported cases were up 1,101 (+0.8%). The number of TOTAL test results was 1,969,971 (up 9,053 from yesterday), which is FAR below what we need, according to researchers at Harvard that would be 22,422/day for mitigation, 81,741/day for suppression). As for hospitalizations, they went up 55 (+0.5%), which is a slower rate of increase than the day before, when hospitalizations were up 76 (+0.7%). Deaths are reported +29, compared to +36 the previous day (NOTE: VDH says, “Regarding the death data for Tuesday, September 15, 2020, there is an existing data backlog. VDH is working diligently to identify COVID-19 related deaths using vital record death certificate information.”).
