See below for two letters – one from Democratic Party of Virginia Chair Susan Swecker and from Jamie Nolan, Richmond City Democratic Committee Chair; the other from DPVA’s attorneys at PerkinsCoie – sent out this morning, calling on the Richmond City Registrar (Ms. J. Kirk Showalter) to either resign or be removed by the electoral board. Reasons cited include:

  • “Failing to comply and giving false information in response to Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests from the Democratic Party of Virginia.”
  • “The admission on Friday, October 30th that the General Registrar was not contacting voters within three days of noticing a material omission on their absentee ballot envelope, a violation of Virginia law.”
  • The Registrar’s “mishandling of what has become the largest COVID-19 outbreak within City government to date.”
  • “The post-election activities in council seats 2 and 8, where vote counts have changed with little to no explanation, further eroding public trust in a tense election cycle.”
  • “Ongoing FOIA violations in regards to posting and making available information about board meeting times and location, agendas, minutes, and more.”
