ICYMI: Delegate Shelly Simonds Holds Press Conference In Response to Voter Registration Concerns in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — Today, Delegate Shelly Simonds (VA-HD-94) held a press conference in response to the news that 3,000 voters are set to be removed from the voter rolls in Newport News.

“I know more than anyone how important it is that every vote counts, so this issue is extremely personal for me and I get riled up thinking that even one voter might not be able to vote on Election Day Nov. 2. These elections have the potential to be incredibly close again in November. Time is running out, so I am urging people to check their voter registration status to make sure they weren’t removed from the poll books because if they were removed there is still time to get back on before the October 11 deadline.”

“We have worked too hard as a Democratic Majority to make sure voting is as accessible as possible, because we know that our communities are stronger when everyone can make their voice heard at the polls. 3,000 is a significant amount of voters to drop off in such a critical election year, and after the strides we’ve made on voting rights, we simply cannot stand by and let this happen without alerting our community.” -Delegate Shelly Simonds (VA-HD-94)

Delegates Simonds and Mullin have launched tools on their websites that allow voters to request an absentee ballot and ensure their registration is up to date. The two campaigns are coordinating to share this tool far and wide across their districts to mitigate as much of the impact of the removal of voters as possible in Newport News.

Delegate Simonds’ Voter Registration tab can be accessed at: https://www.simondsfordelegate.com/voter-registration-status/

This launch also occurs in conjunction with the announcement of a Voter Registration Drive being hosted by the campaigns this upcoming Sunday, September 12.

With so much on the line, it is critical that no voter be kept from the ballot box as a result of any unnecessary barrier, and Delegate Simonds is doing all she can to make sure every Virginian has equal ability to participate in our Democratic process.
