From the Democratic Party of Virginia:
Virginia Republicans Try and Fail to Undo Progress on Voting Rights
Richmond, VA — This week, Republican Senator Amanda Chase and Virginia Republicans tried and failed to pass a flurry of voter restrictions bills under the guise of Donald Trump’s “Big Lie.” Virginia Democrats meanwhile reiterated their commitment to protecting voting rights and defeated the voting restriction bills in Committee – a victory in an effort to keep Virginia’s elections free, fair and secure.
Sen. Amanda Chase, most famously known for calling the Jan. 6 insurrectionists ‘patriots,’ introduced voting restrictions that would:
- Repeal same-day voting
- Hinder vote-by-mail
- Conduct unnecessary oversight to General Registrars
This isn’t the first failed attempt by Republicans to restrict voting rights. Virginia Democrats killed a crucial campaign ‘election integrity’ promise made by Gov. Youngkin when the Democratic majority in the Virginia State Senate voted against a voter ID bill that was supported by the governor. Last year, Glenn Youngkin launched his campaign on an “election integrity task force,” and continues to be all-in on Trump’s far-right conspiracy theories that erode our democratic processes.
In 2020, under the leadership of Virginia Democrats, Virginia became the first southern state to adopt its own voting rights act. While Republicans continue to restrict voting rights, Democrats will remain steadfast in their defense of protecting a Virginian’s right to participate in their elections.
