Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA07) rightfully rips Glenn Youngkin:
The Governor either doesn’t know Virginia’s constitution or he’s lying & assuming we won’t notice. @costareports asked him about the threat to Obergefell & marriage equality after SCOTUS overturned Roe and whether he’d protect marriage equality in Virginia.
He deflected & waxed on about how the Dobbs ruling simply returns decision making to the states & legislatures. Here’s the thing-> Virginia has a constitutional ban on same sex marriage & it has only been court cases that have protected marriage equality here.
Roe was overturned after nearly 50 years & Justice Thomas specifically called out the Obergefell ruling in his opinion. Marriage equality is under threat and Virginia’s ban on same sex marriage must be removed from our constitution to protect thousands of Virginia families.
Removing the constitutional ban on marriage equality is a multi-year process and Virginia was 1/3 of the way there when Republicans in the General Assembly killed the effort in committee earlier this year. @pwcdanica explains how they did this.
If @GovernorVA wants to tell the national media that Virginia – and he as Governor – protect marriage equality & actually mean it, he should publicly urge Republicans state lawmakers to continue the process of removing this shameful constitutional ban.
As I know he won’t, I’m grateful @SenLouiseLucas is planning for a future when Virginia will finally remove the ban from our constitution. It’s a multi-year process & to succeed, we must win back the House of Delegates & hold the State Senate in 2023.
Bingo!
