Bipartisanship on the Hill: Democrats and Republicans Agree Impeachment Sham Is About Helping Trump

It’s the holiday season and bipartisanship is in the air. 

Democrats and Republicans both agree: The fact-free, evidence-free, gluten-free, waste-of-time impeachment inquiry launched yesterday by House Republicans is all in service of one goal, helping Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. 

How do we know? Republicans have told us – over and over and over again. 

MAGA Republicans in Congress are saying the quiet part out loud: They have no evidence of wrongdoing by the president, and this impeachment sham is all about helping Donald Trump get reelected. 

Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX): “A little bit of ammo to fire back” at Joe Biden.

Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX), when asked what he hoped to gain from an impeachment inquiry: “Trump 2024, baby.”

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) admits the inquiry is a stunt to try to hurt President Biden politically: “I think all that together is why you see the [poll] numbers where they are at.”

Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE): “I don’t know that you’ll see a high crime or misdemeanor.”

Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA): “I have no evidence. … The facts haven’t taken me to that point where I can say that the president is guilty of anything.”

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) criticized some conservative colleagues’ calls for impeachment: “The people back at home in my district are worried about inflation, worried about the border, their kids being safe in school — you know, real issues.”

Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-NC): “I acknowledge that” there is no evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden.

Sen. Shelley Moore (R-WV): “We got so many things we need to be focusing on. … I don’t see the glaring evidence that says we need to move forward. I didn’t see it in the Trump case and voted against it. I don’t see it in this case.”

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX): On impeachment: “We don’t have the evidence now.”

Rep. John Curtis (R-UT):  “No,” I have not seen anything that comes close to the bar for impeachment. 

Rep. Dave Joyce (R-OH): “You hear a lot of rumor and innuendo … but that’s not fact to me. … I’ve not seen any” facts to warrant impeachment.

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA): “The actual participation by the vice president and now president – that still has to be discovered and or nailed down.”

Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO): “Republicans in the House who are itching for an impeachment are relying on an imagined history.”

Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-SD): “I have not seen that evidence” to impeach.

Democrats agree! Here’s what they’re saying about the House Republicans’ evidence-free impeachment stunt: 

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY): This impeachment inquiry “is happening because the puppet-master-in-chief, the former twice impeached so-called president of the United States … has ordered them to launch this impeachment inquiry  as a political hit job on President Joe Biden.”

Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA): “[Republicans] aren’t looking for the truth, they’re looking for revenge. … The Republican Party works for Donald Trump, not for you. … They want to hide the truth … because they know their whole impeachment inquiry is a sham.”

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD): “After 11 months of this, no one can tell us what President Biden’s crime was, much less where it happened, when it happened, what the motive was, who the perpetrators were or who the victims were.”

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA): “This impeachment inquiry is a political stunt with zero evidence. We’re here today … because Donald Trump wants revenge. Welcome to the Donald Trump revenge show. … This is all to appease … Trump.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY): “The Committee issued a subpoena and Hunter Biden is here in an attempt to comply with that subpoena. It is the committee that has rejected the terms that they themselves set out for compliance with that subpoena that is now preventing a public and due process from happening.”

Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost (D-FL): “Today House Republicans are going to weaponize Congress to open a baseless impeachment inquiry into President Biden. Despite months of trying to string together absurd conspiracy theories, they have zero proof.

Today House Republicans will show the American people who they are beholden to. And it’s not their constituents. It’s Donald Trump.”

Adam Schiff (D-CA): “I just spoke on the House floor about the through-line, from the legitimate impeachments of Donald Trump to the illegitimate impeachment inquiry into President Biden.”

Congressman Jared Moskowitz (D-FL): “MAGA Republicans want you to know that this Biden impeachment inquiry is SO important that they’re about to vote and then leave DC for 3 weeks. They are gonna vote and run away, out of town. 

The only evidence they’ve uncovered is that Joe Biden is the father of Hunter Biden.”
