Cao And Parkinson Do Not Support IVF Protections, Would Rip Away Reproductive Freedom From Virginians

Richmond, VA – As the U.S. Senate is set to vote on whether to vote to protect IVF, Virginians do not have to guess where GOP U.S. Senate candidates Scott Parkinson and Hung Cao stand when it comes to protecting IVF: they both oppose IVF protections.

Following the Alabama ruling jeopardizing in vitro fertilization, Virginians have been wondering if their right to plan their own families will be protected. This is the new landscape because of GOP support for cruel abortion bans following Trump-backed Supreme Court justices who are hellbent on chipping away at reproductive freedom. And if MAGA extremists Parkinson and Cao had their way, they would go even further in restricting reproductive freedom.

“The Alabama Supreme Court decision putting IVF access at risk is a direct result of Trump’s extreme Supreme Court justices overturning Roe v. Wade – and Cao and Parkinson would put IVF in jeopardy for Virginia families if they were in the U.S. Senate,” said DPVA Chairwoman Susan Swecker. “MAGA extremists like Cao and Parkinson have supported their party’s out-of-touch agenda to insert themselves into women’s most personal decisions about when and how to start a family. The first IVF baby was born in our Commonwealth – and Virginians won’t forget that GOP candidates like Parkinson and Cao would be in lockstep with Trump and rip away women’s reproductive freedom this November.”

Extreme MAGA Republicans Parkinson and Cao have used extreme rhetoric showing they are hostile to reproductive freedom:

  • Parkinson called abortion “murder.”
  • Cao compared abortion to the Holocaust and said that he saw the same evil in the eyes of a bomb maker that had killed thousands of people as people who support abortion.

Both Parkinson and Cao believe life begins at conception, which would put IVF access in jeopardy:

  • Parkinson tweeted that “Life begins at conception. #Prolife”
  • Cao stated in a recent interview that he believes “life begins at conception.” In a candidate survey for the Prince William & Manassas Family Alliance, he said that he would support a law “to protect innocent life from conception to natural death.”

Parkinson and Cao have cheered Trump’s attempts to restrict reproductive freedom:

  • On the John Fredericks Show, Parkinson called Trump’s plan for a national abortion ban “smart” and celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
  • Cao tweeted he was “thrilled” that Roe v. Wade was overturned.
