Following Veto of Right to Contraception Act, Sears Calls Protecting Access to Birth Control “Pushing A Political Agenda”

Winsome Earle-Sears: “[…] This legislation is more about pushing a political agenda […]”

VIRGINIA – Following the veto of the Right to Contraception Act and Winsome Earle-Sears’ tie-breaking vote against it, in brand new comments reported by Radio IQ, Sears finally shared the reason behind her vote: she believes protecting access to birth control and contraception is “pushing a political agenda.”

“Winsome Earle-Sears equating protecting access to contraception to “pushing a political agenda” is a reminder of her refusal to protect Virginians’ fundamental rights. While Virginians deserve leaders who will protect their rights, Sears supports a dangerous agenda that would strip Virginia women of their right to make decisions about their own bodies,” said DPVA Spokesperson Maggie Amjad.

Read more about Sears’ dangerous record on reproductive rights:

  • Sears admitted she would not sign the Right to Contraception Act into law saying “Virginians already have broad access [to contraception], and this legislation is more about pushing a political agenda than protecting women’s health.”
  • Sears “couldn’t resist” voting against this legislation to guarantee Virginia women’s access to contraception.
    • She refused to answer questions from the media about her tie-breaking vote denying Virginians access to contraception and birth control.
  • Sears supports an extreme six week abortion ban similar to the law that took effect in Texas that bans abortion before most women know they are pregnant.
  • Sears has said that she would support an abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest.
    • January 2021: The Winchester Star reported that Sears said she wanted to make abortion illegal in all cases, unless the life of the mother was at risk.
