John Reid Silent As Running Mate Winsome Earle-Sears Bizarrely Claims Opposing Gay Rights Is “Not Discrimination”
Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor Ghazala Hashmi: “As lieutenant governor, I will always fight for John Reid’s right to marriage equality — even if he won’t.”
Virginia Mercury: Republican Reid vows to block Democrat-led amendments that would enshrine voting, marriage and reproductive rights into Virginia’s constitution
RICHMOND, VA — Last night, John Reid’s running mate Winsome Earle-Sears shocked Virginians by bizarrely claiming that her support for denying gay couples the right to marry and letting Virginians get fired for being gay are “not discrimination.” Now, John Reid is silent on whether he agrees with his running mate’s extreme claims.
Reid has his own record of making it clear he would vote against protecting marriage equality, and he said that Earle-Sears “hasn’t changed on all those positions” regarding workplace protections for gay Virginians.
“Winsome Earle-Sears and John Reid will not protect the rights of gay Virginians to marry who they love or to be free from discrimination in the workplace. Virginians deserve better than leaders who support stripping away freedoms and will move our Commonwealth backwards,” said Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor Ghazala Hashmi. “As lieutenant governor, I will always fight for John Reid’s right to marriage equality — even if he won’t.”
What To Know About Reid’s Opposition To Protecting The Rights Of Gay Virginians:
- Reid said he would vote “no” on the constitutional amendment to enshrine the right to same-sex marriage.
- Reid has doubled down on this extreme stance, calling the constitutional amendment that would guarantee gay couples the right to marry who they love “poorly worded.”
- Reid continues to support Earle-Sears despite him making it clear that she is “100% against” gay marriage and “hasn’t changed” on her previous support for letting Virginians get fired for being gay.
