RICHMOND, Va. — Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger today released the following statement after new reporting brought to light how the Youngkin-Sears Administration is covering up the full scope of hundreds of millions of dollars in lost federal grants for Virginia as a result of the Trump Administration’s chaos. VPM and WAMU broke the news that the Youngkin-Sears Administration “declined to release six pages of documents that detail the [paused or canceled] grants.”
“Virginia cannot contend with challenges unless we are honest and transparent about their full scope. The Youngkin-Sears Administration has chosen to hide the details of these federal losses for Virginia — seemingly because they believe it is politically advantageous to conceal this information with an election less than three weeks away.
“Making a blatant, concerted effort to conceal what should be public information is insulting to Virginia taxpayers, particularly those affected by these devastating cuts. Virginians deserve to know the full extent of how the Trump Administration is unilaterally cutting taxpayer dollars for mental health support, teacher residency programs, projects to improve the Commonwealth’s local energy generation — and other investments to support Virginians and strengthen our communities. At the most foundational level, Virginians deserve transparency and certainty from their elected leaders.
“Governor Youngkin and Lieutenant Governor Earle-Sears must immediately release this information — and explain why it was concealed in the first place — so that Virginia’s leaders can respond to threats to Virginians’ health, safety, and strength.”
