Sears Lies About Debate Night Answer, But Refuses to Say Opposing Gay Marriage and Firing Virginians for Being Gay Is Discrimination

Sears on firing Virginians for being gay and opposing gay marriage: “that’s not discrimination”

VIRGINIA – In a disastrous new interview with WAVY 10 TV, Winsome Earle-Sears outright lied about her debate night answer when she said that opposing same-sex marriage and firing Virginians for being gay is “not discrimination.”

When asked about the comments, Sears refused to admit opposing gay marriage and firing Virginians for being gay is discrimination. Then when asked what she would say instead if she could go back, Sears claims she said “I’m not discriminating”.

During the debate, Abigail Spanberger clearly raised Sears’ “moral opposition” to same-sex marriage and support for  letting Virginians get fired for being gay, while Sears repeatedly says “that’s not discrimination.”

Transcript:

  • Reporter: Now in one of the things she [Abigail Spanberger] said, “My opponent has previously said that she does not think the gay couple should be allowed to marry and that it is okay to fire someone who is gay. And you [Sears] said, “that is not discrimination, that is not discrimination.” Do you want to change anything about your answer?
  • SearsI mean, you know, I didn’t hear exactly what she was saying, because half of what she was saying nobody could understand anyway, was a lot of word salad. What I meant to say is I wasn’t discriminating. I’m not going to be discriminating. […]
  • Reporter: So you were saying that, if given the opportunity to say it again, you would say, what?
  • SearsWell, remember now I had already answered a question very similar to this on discrimination. […] So I said, I’m not discriminating. […]
