The chain reaction of elections continues: 1) State Senator Ghazala Hashmi (D-SD15) was elected Lt. Governor back on November 4th; 2) a special election for SD15 was set for January 6th, with Democratic voters nominating Del. Michael Jones (D-HD77) in a “firehouse primary” this past Sunday; 3) Del. Jones submitted his resignation and now Speaker Don Scott has called the special election for HD77 for January 6th; 4) Democrats will select their nominee for HD77 this coming Sunday, with three candidates listed by VPAP so far (Michelle Mosby, Gregory Thomas Powers, Charles Schmidt) – see below for more information, including press releases as I see them. Fun times, huh?

From VPAP, here’s some info on deep-blue HD77, which went for Kamala Harris by 50 points in November 2024.

Firehouse Primary for HD-77 to Be Held on Sunday, December 14, 2025
RICHMOND, VA – The HD-77 Nominating Committee has voted to hold an unassembled caucus, commonly known as a firehouse primary, to determine its nominee for the upcoming special election to fill the unexpired term of Delegate Mike Jones. Delegate Jones resigned his house seat this week after winning a firehouse primary to be the Democratic nominee to succeed Lieutenant Governor-elect Ghazala Hashmi in SD-15.
Under the Commonwealth’s election law, the nominating process for special elections not occurring concurrently with a November general election must be party-run. In order to operate the most open and fair nominating process possible, the HD-77 Nominating Committee voted to hold a firehouse primary on Sunday, December 14, 2025.
Voting will be open from 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM at the following locations:
- Richmond High School for the Arts – 4314 Crutchfield Street Richmond, VA 23235
- Providence Middle School – 900 Starlight Lane Chesterfield, VA 23234
To file, candidates must submit a filing fee, along with a copy of the candidate’s Certificate of Candidate Qualification and Statement of Economic Interest to the HD-77 Nominating Committee by 9:00 AM on December 12, 2025. For further information, please direct all correspondence to the Chair of the HD-77 Nominating Committee, Nick Scott, whose information can be found above.
The Democratic nominee elected in Sunday’s firehouse primary will advance to the special general election to be held on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
