See below for Virginians’ reactions to today’s rulings by the far-right-extremist, illegitimate, corrupt, lawless, out-of-control, disastrous US Supreme Court majority. I’d just say that any praise of this Court for doing the absolute bare minimum, in the most outrageous cases, and even then often by narrow majorities, is misguided. But sure, if you avoid complete disaster – such as in the birthright citizenship case – I suppose you can celebrate if you want. I’m not doing that, as this Court has done ENORMOUS damage, continues to do ENORMOUS damage, and remains an existential threat to our democracy, rule of law, constitution, etc. That is absolutely NOTHING to celebrate!
P.S. Reactions to yesterday’s rulings are here.

- Rep. James Walkinshaw (D-VA11): “Donald Trump tried to rewrite the Constitution. Today, he lost. Birthright citizenship is guaranteed by the 14th Amendment, and no president can take that away with an executive order.”
Lieutenant Governor Ghazala Hashmi Applauds Supreme Court Decision Upholding Birthright Citizenship
RICHMOND, VA – Lieutenant Governor Ghazala Hashmi released the following statement after today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling ending birthright citizenship:
“Today’s decision reaffirms one of the most fundamental promises of the Fourteenth Amendment: that every child born in the United States is a citizen, regardless of their parents’ immigration status. This ruling upholds our Constitution, protects countless families from fear and uncertainty, and affirms that citizenship is not a partisan tool.”
Lieutenant Governor Ghazala Hashmi Condemns U.S. Supreme Court Decision Targeting Transgender Youth
RICHMOND, VA – Lieutenant Governor Ghazala Hashmi released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled today that states can ban transgender women and girls from competing in women’s and girls’ sports:
“Today’s decision is rooted in fear and exclusion, not fairness. It sends a harmful message to transgender people that they are less deserving of dignity, belonging, and equal treatment under the law. Every child deserves the opportunity to participate, learn and thrive without being singled out or targeted for who they are.”
- Sen. Mark Warner: “The 14th amendment clearly states that individuals born in the U.S. are citizens, and today the Supreme Court reaffirmed that by striking down Trump’s illegal executive order.”
KAINE PRAISES SUPREME COURT’S BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP RULING
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), a former civil rights attorney, released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Trump v. Barbara:
“President Trump’s attempt to restrict birthright citizenship by executive order was lawless and shameful from the start. I am glad that the Supreme Court ruled against this attempted circumvention of the Fourteenth Amendment and the foundational Supreme Court precedent of Wong Kim Ark. Today the Court affirmed the post-Civil War guarantee that no matter your parents’ circumstances, if you are born in the United States, you are an American and may pursue your happiness here.“
Kaine has vigorously and consistently pushed back against the Trump Administration’s efforts to limit birthright citizenship. In December 2024, he delivered a speech on the Senate floor condemning then-President-elect Trump’s stated intention to end the Fourteenth Amendment’s guarantee of birthright citizenship. In January 2025, just before the beginning of President Trump’s second term, Kaine again delivered a speech highlighting notable Americans born to immigrant parents and their contributions to American society and culture. Later that same month, Kaine condemned President Trump’s birthright citizenship executive order. In May 2025, Kaine excoriated President Trump for, in an unhinged Truth Social screed, denigrating the U.S. as “a stupid country” for its constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship.
