It’s good to see Maureen Coffey throw her hat in the ring for Arlington County Board (see her press release, below). With two superb members of the County Board (Christian Dorsey and Katie Cristol) not running for reelection this year, Arlington really needs talented people to step up, and from what I’ve seen (e.g., check out this video of Coffey moderating an Attorney General candidate forum in April 2021), Maureen Coffey definitely qualifies in that regard.
P.S. Two other candidates – Tony Weaver and JD Spain – are listed by VPAP as having filed for Arlington County Board. Also, Jonathan Dromgoole announced last night, but isn’t listed on VPAP for whatever reason.
Former VA Young Dems President, Civic Federation Secretary Maureen Coffey Announces Candidacy for Arlington County Board
Arlington, VA – Last night at Lubber Run Community Center, former Virginia Young Democrats President Maureen Coffey announced her candidacy for the Arlington County Board. Coffey is seeking the Democratic nomination for one of two open Arlington County Board seats in 2023.
Coffey is a policy analyst at the Center for American Progress and her work has focused on racial and gender equity. She previously served on the board of the Arlington County Civic Federation, and she was appointed by Gov. Ralph Northam to the Virginia Family and Children’s Trust. Coffey is running for the County Board in order to promote progressive legislation that strengthens our community, combats institutional bias and discrimination, and ensures the well-being of all Arlington residents.
In her speech last night, Coffey said, “Arlington needs a vision for where we’re going. We know what our needs are, but we need a plan to meet the needs of our community and at the same time protect what we love about Arlington. We need to provide more opportunities for safe, affordable housing and increase access to quality child-care and mental-health resources.”
Atima Omara, co-founder of Arlington for Justice shared her support of Coffey: “Maureen is someone who not only has the relevant professional, lived, and community experience to work with Arlington County government to meet its ever-changing constituents’ needs but is part of a new generation of folks seeking to make Arlington their home. Arlington is changing a lot and needs leaders like Maureen who are interested in finding solutions that meet the needs of all of its community, not just a few.”
