| Today, the DCCC is expanding House Democrats’ Districts in Play for the 2026 election cycle to include Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, signaling Democrats’ readiness to reclaim the House majority by widening the battlefield and working to defeat Congressman John McGuire.
The DCCC’s Districts in Play are competitive districts held by vulnerable Republicans across the country that will determine the House Majority.
McGuire’s addition to the DCCC’s Districts in Play sends the clear message that Democrats know Southside Virginia voters are souring on his wildly unpopular record of raising costs, attacking affordable health care, and hurting working families.
Statement from DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene:
“Congressman John McGuire has put his own extreme politics ahead of Southside Virginians. McGuire voted for devastating health care cuts that put Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill at risk of closure and have already forced health clinics across Virginia to shutter. He voted to jack up Virginians’ health care premiums and has rubber-stamped reckless tariffs that are making everything from groceries to housing more expensive. Southside Virginians are sick and tired of Washington politicians like McGuire who do nothing to make their lives better, and the DCCC is prepared to make sure they elect a representative in November who will put them first.”
Democrats’ consistent overperformance in special elections this cycle is further proof that we have a path to victory this year to unseat McGuire and win VA-05.
