Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Monday, March 21.
- Clinton team’s playbook: Paint Trump as unfit for presidency (Which of course is true, so that shouldn’t be too hard.)
- Obama begins historic visit to Cuba (I urge him to strongly and forcefully challenge Cuba on its human rights record.)
- February’s Global Temperature Spike is a Wake-Up Call (We desperately need to “keep it in the ground!”)
- The Supreme Court fight is about democracy (“Attacking ‘a spurious majoritarian ethic’ is another way of criticizing the democratic process.”)
- George Will Shreds Trump’s new Republican Party: ‘He’s appealing entirely to white people’(Angry, ignorant, bigoted white people for the most part.)
- ‘Shocking’: Trump is such a GOP nightmare he puts Utah in play for the first time in 50 years (LOL)
- Can we please retire the notion that Donald Trump is hijacking someone else’s party? (“The Establishment’s feckless effort to derail Trump has, if anything, sparked a pro-Trump backlash among the GOP’s base and, even more perversely, had the unintended consequence of boosting the far-right Ted Cruz, another authoritarian bomb-thrower who is hated by the Establishment as much as, if not more than, Trump is.”)
- McConnell: No New Supreme Court Justice Until The NRA Approves Of The Nominee (So much for their being any “principle” behind McConnell’s insane, anti-democratic obstructionism.)
- Trump Praises The ‘Spirit’ Of Campaign Manager Who Became Physical At A Rally (They’re both authoritarian goons.)
- Donald Trump is a delusional crybaby: In the GOP’s long con, rich white people are the new victims (“Fox News, Trump and the Republican Party have taught conservatives the insane fiction that they are marginalized”)
- A Top Ted Cruz Advisor Thinks Islamists Are Infiltrating the NRA (Cruz is even crazier and more extreme than Trump, if that’s humanly possible.)
- Trump puts GOP House majority in jeopardy (“Democrats already have reasonable odds of flipping a dozen or so House seats.”)
- Paul Krugman: On Invincible Ignorance (“Like just about everyone in the Republican establishment, Mr. Ryan is in denial about the roots of Trumpism, about the extent to which the party deliberately cultivated anger and racial backlash, only to lose control of the monster it created. But what I found especially striking were his comments on tax policy.” Again, why is Ryan taken seriously on policy by anyone?)
- Virginia Republicans take redistricting fight to the Supreme Court
- Editorial: Terry McAuliffe takes credit where it isn’t due (As Bob McDonnell did before him, and as other governors did previously. What else is new?)
- Was Va. map redrawn to protect a black congressman’s seat or to keep others out?
- Separate but equal? Wealthy county’s plan would concentrate low-income, Hispanic students (“A debate in Virginia centers on serving high-need students amid concerns about segregation.”)
- Editorial: Progress and leadership on transportation (“Compromise often isn’t pretty, but in Hampton Roads last week, it resulted in a way forward for road improvements and light rail.”)
- McAuliffe unveiling wheelchair ramp at Executive mansion
- Sound of gunfire reported in Fairfax area where economist was found dead
- Chilly today, then significant midweek warming
