Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Sunday, April 23. Also, if you missed it, check out the March for Science in Washington, DC, including speakers like Bill Nye and Michael Mann.
- France votes in uncertain race that could shape Europe’s future
- France votes for new president amid high security
- Congress must make a deal to avoid a shutdown. So, about that wall… (“Democrats should not give in to demands for a down payment on a border barrier.”)
- Ryan vows to keep government open, makes no promises on health care
- Ryan: Focus is on keeping government open, not healthcare (Of course, he’s Lyin’ Ryan, so who the heck knows.)
- Trump’s approval ratings sit at record lows but base stays steady, poll shows
- President Trump at 100 Days: No honeymoon, but no regrets (POLL) (Trump literally could shoot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue and he wouldn’t lose his voters.)
- Dr. Michael Mann speaks at the March for Science
- Bill Nye at March for Science: ‘Science serves every one of us.’
- Trump Thinks This Is Pro-Life? (“Yet here in Haiti, I’ll tell you the result: Impoverished women suffer ghastly injuries and excruciating deaths. Washington’s new women’s health policies should be called ‘pro-death.'” Of course, the term “pro-life” is b.s.; those people are accurately described as “anti-abortion” or “anti-women’s-right-to-control-their-own-bodies,” not “pro-life.”)
- 7 things we’ve learned about Earth since the last Earth Day
- 21 of the best March for Science protest signs
- A scholar asks, ‘Can democracy survive the Internet?’ (I’m skeptical it can.)
- Surgeon General removed from post by Trump administration, replaced by deputy
- Lofty prices for Perriello’s bold campaign promises (Virginia’s budget is over $50 billion per year, loaded with tons of tax breaks for wealthy people and corporations, which means that $900 million – to “fully fund universal pre-K,” require “eight weeks family leave, paid at two-thirds of a worker’s salary,” etc. – isn’t “lofty” in any way. I’d also note that Tim Kaine also proposed universal pre-K, back when he ran in 2005. This was a great idea then and it’s a great idea now. We need to take back the Virginia General Assembly and make that happen!)
- Jennifer Allen: The latest attack on women’s health (“On April 13, President Donald Trump signed a bill that overturned protections for the more than 4 million people who depend on Title X, the nation’s family-planning program, for health care. This number includes more than 62,000 Virginians.”)
- Terry McAuliffe: Restoration of voting rights, one year later
- Loyalty to Trump emerges as issue in Virginia Republican debate
- Tom Perriello: 13 Ways I Will Fight For Virginia’s Environment (Great stuff!)
- Schapiro: Clues out of Northern Virginia anything but clear
- Democratic candidates for Virginia governor weigh in on rural issues
- Ralph Northam, Tom Perriello discuss rural issues in first forum
- President Barack Obama to open 32nd season of The Richmond Forum
- Editorial: Democrats and the corrupting power of money (More looniness from the extremist Republican Times-Dispatch editorial page.)
- Hampton Roads Straw Poll results (Gillespie 78.4%, Wagner 21.5%, Stewart ZERO; Davis 44.4%, Vogel 35.4%, Reeves 20.2%)
- Editorial: Two years later, still looking for answers (“ON APRIL 22, 2015, a 24-year-old man with a history of mental illness was arrested by police at a Portsmouth convenience store for allegedly stealing $5.05 in snacks. On Aug. 19, 101 days later, he was found dead in his cell at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail.”)
- Arlington board raises tax rate 1.5 cents, all devoted to schools and Metro (“Board finds other ways to pay for additional projects.”)
- Drier today but rain returns tonight, and could stay for a while
