Good to see Virginia Del. Kathy Tran (D) responding to the volumes of rhetoric we’ve heard from Republicans the past couple days on her abortion bill (see here for the facts about the bill, including “The idea that abortion providers tear apart full-term, viable babies about to breathe has animated the far right for a long time. It’s the stuff of pulp fiction, and the myth bears little resemblance to reality”). According to Del. Tran, her bill would simply “repeal the medically unnecessary and unduly burdensome barriers that Virginia women face when they’re accessing this health care service in consultation with their doctor.” Tran adds:
“I was really surprised by the line of questioning that I got [given that] this bill had been introduced in the General Assembly in previous years…I want to be very clear about what’s currently allowed in Virginia law: right now, women are able to access an abortion in the later stages of pregnancy under certain conditions with the approval of medical doctors. I’ve done nothing to change that. What I have done is try to make sure that women are able to make these decisions and access these services in a timely manner.”
