Council 20 of AFSCME, the largest public sector union in the county, Endorses Democrat Tim Chapman for Chair of Fairfax County Board

VIENNA, VA: Council 20 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) has endorsed Democrat Tim Chapman for Chair of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. With more than 1.6 million active and retired members, AFSCME is the largest public sector union in the United States.

“Working families cannot afford to have leaders who are coasting — we need leaders who are fighting — like  Tim Chapman,” said Andrew Washington, Executive Director of AFSCME’s Council 20. “That is why the Executive Board of Council 20 voted to unanimously endorse Tim Chapman for Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.”

“We need leaders who will genuinely act in the best interest of their constituents,” Washington added. “Tim knows that Fairfax County can do more for its citizens. He is well prepared to fight for Fairfax County’s working families, and tackle issues that the Board has failed to act on for years.”

“I am proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with the working men and women of Council 20 because we share a vision for Fairfax that we must act now to make to do better,” said Tim Chapman.  “We must act now for secure more affordable housing, ease traffic congestion and prepare our children for the workforce in 21st century schools, not moldy old trailers.”

“At a time when so many of our rights and benefits are being threatened at the federal level, unions are playing an important role in protecting our rights more than ever,” Chapman added. “Fairfax County can no longer balance its budget on the backs of the  people who work so hard to deliver services to our county’s citizens. If elected to serve, one of my first acts as Chair will be to introduce legislation to rescind the reduction in benefits for our public employees, passed last year.”
