Yesterday, Virginia Senate and House Democrats held a joint press conference to condemn Republicans in the state legislature for focusing on divisive social issues, to the detriment of Virginia families.
The fact is, Democrats are ready to work with Republicans to find real solutions that improve the economy, repair Virginia’s crumbling roads, and invest in a world-class education.
But over the past four weeks, we’ve seen:
- 10+ bills interfering with women’s private medical decisions, which should be left to a woman, her family, and her faith
- 12 bills placing obstacles between Virginians who have fallen on hard times and the public assistance they need to get back on their feet, denigrating the poor.
- 25+ bills dealing with handguns, weakening Virginia’s crime prevention tools
- 3 bills establishing some Virginians as second-class citizens because of their sexual orientation
- 9 bills attacking Virginia workers’ rights and protections
- 10+ bills seemingly designed to prevent minorities, the young, elderly, and disabled Virginians from voting.
This isn’t what Republicans were elected to do. It’s time to focus like a laser on the issues affecting Virginia families — jobs, education, and protecting the safety net for the most needy.
