So, at this point (6/7), in Virginia we’re at 50,681 total reported – confirmed plus probable – cases (note that actual cases, as well as deaths, could be higher, maybe even a LOT higher, based on stories like this one in the NY Times), 5,106 hospitalizations and 1,472 deaths from COVID-19. The number of reported cases went up 1,284 (+2.6%) in the latest statistics, which is a faster rate of increase than the day before, when reported cases were up 865 (+1.8%), and the largest day-over-day increase in cases since May 26. The number of TOTAL test results was 424,316 (up 9,933 from 414,383 yesterday), while the number of “PCR Only” tests was 377,484 (up 8,627 from 368,857 yesterday). These testing numbers are slightly below 10,000 per day (a number Gov. Northam has repeatedly stated as an important goal), and well lower than the 16,664 per day that Harvard’s Global Health Institute estimates we need to reopen safely and contain the virus. As for hospitalizations, they went up 52 (+1.0%), from 5,054 to 5,106, which is a slightly faster rate of increase than the day before, when hospitalizations were up 46 (+0.9%). Deaths are reported up 12 (from 1,460 to 1,472), compared to an increase of 7 (from 1,453 to 1,460) the previous day.
