Just a quick update of the situation with Rep. Denver Riggleman (R-VA05), who faces a tough challenge from Republican rival Bob Good at an unassembled convention scheduled for this coming Saturday, June 13, at the “Tree of Life Ministries” in Lynchburg.  On Friday, Riggleman appealed to the VA GOP State Central Committee (SCC), asking that the SCC require the Fifth District Committee to provide for multiple voting locations for any unassembled convention, preferably one in each of the 23 included units.”

So that didn’t go very well for Riggleman. Check out the following video, from yesterday, of the SCC’s roll call vote rejecting Riggleman’s appeal (by a 40-32 vote).

With that, Riggleman faces a very tough convention on Saturday, with the real possibility that he could lose the nomination to Bob Good. Could Democrats (note: meet the VA05 Democratic candidates here) take advantage of this turmoil in VA05 GOP ranks and win a district that Trump carried by 14 points in 2016, that Corey Stewart narrowly carried by 2 points in 2018, and that Riggleman won by about 7 points in 2018? I’d say it’s still a long shot, but…if Republicans are bitterly divided AND if Democrats run a super-strong candidate/campaign this fall, then it could be possible.
