See below for graphics of the newly posted COVID-19 numbers by the Virginia Department of Health and the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. So, at this point (8/16), in Virginia we’re at 106,687 total reported – confirmed plus probable – cases (note that actual cases, as well as deaths, could be higher, maybe even a LOT higher, based on stories like this one in the NY Times), 8,737 hospitalizations and 2,381 deaths from COVID-19. The number of reported cases went up 937 (+0.9%) in the latest statistics, which is the same rate of increase than the day before, when reported cases were up 912 (+0.9%). The number of TOTAL test results was 1,464,128 (up 17,206 from 1,446,922 yesterday), which is still below what we need, according to researchers at Harvard (that would be 22,422/day for mitigation, 81,741/day for suppression). As for hospitalizations, they went up 36 (+0.4%), from 8,701 to 8,737, which is a slower rate of increase than the day before, when hospitalizations were up 51 (+0.6%).  Deaths are reported unchanged (at 2,381), compared to an increase of 11 (from 2,370 to 2,381) the previous day.
