Video: As House Committee Considers DC Statehood, Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA11) Says That for Republicans, “DC is simply too brown and too Democratic to be worthy of representation”

Great stuff by Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA11), who calls out Republicans for their absurd, bad-faith objections to DC statehood. As Rep. Connolly writes:

The GOP has a predilection for disenfranchising voters of color. We’ve seen it time and again across the country, most recently in Georgia. Can’t win them over with ideas? Easy – just don’t let them vote. The same goes for Republican opposition to DC Statehood. To them, DC is simply too brown and too Democratic to be worthy of representation.”

The context of Connolly’s remarks, by the way, is this:

The House Oversight and Reform Committee is expected to pass legislation on Wednesday that would make Washington, D.C., the nation’s 51st state.

Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) and D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D) announced on Wednesday that the panel will hold a hearing at 10 a.m. to consider H.R. 51, also known as the Washington D.C. Admissions Act.

Obviously, this is long past overdue. Also obviously, Republicans are engaging in “subterfuge for a powerful dynamic…at work in [the GOP] to make it harder for people of color to vote in this great democracy because they’re afraid they may lose an election when that happens.”
