McClellan Responds to Sen. Chase’s Repeated Bigoted Attacks

McClellan Calls on GOP Candidates to Speak Up Against Chase’s Bigotry

RICHMOND — Today, candidate for governor Senator Jennifer McClellan (D-Richmond) released the following statement responding to the latest in a string of racist attacks from Republican gubernatorial candidate Sen. Amanda Chase. Yesterday at a rally in Pearisburg, Chase said McClellan “should stop being a racist” and “will not represent everyone” because of her leadership as Vice Chair of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus.

“It’s disappointing that Sen. Chase has focused her entire campaign around attacking me and the work of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus,” McClellan said. “It’s time for every Republican candidate running for governor to call out Sen. Chase’s comments for what they are: racist attacks that Virginians will not tolerate.

“My campaign for governor is about uplifting all Virginians from every corner of our Commonwealth. That’s exactly what I’ve done in the legislature for 15 years, and as the Vice Chair of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus. We’ve led on generational change to expand access to health care for hundreds of thousands of Virginians, reform the justice system, expand access to voting, and create jobs in every community. The bigotry of some elected officials will never hold me back from serving the people of Virginia.”

McClellan has been the subject of remarks from Sen. Chase – the self-appointed “Trump-In-Heels,” — since June 2020, when Chase said, “I’m sick and tired of all of the identity politics and yet the Virginia Governor’s race in 2021 is shaping up to be all about who will be the best female for Governor. If you thought Ralph Northam was bad wait til you see the McClellan agenda. She serves as the vice-chair of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus. One thing you can be sure of: she is not for all Virginians.” Chase doubled down on targeting McClellan’s VLBC leadership again last month.
