Glenn Youngkin Goes To RNC With A Failed Track Record and Zero Accomplishments in Virginia

11

From the Democratic Party of Virginia:

Glenn Youngkin Goes To RNC With A Failed Track Record and Zero Accomplishments in Virginia

Tonight, Glenn Youngkin will speak at the Republican National Convention. DPVA Chairwoman Susan Swecker shared the following statement:

“Just a few years ago, Republicans and the media praised Youngkin as a “rising star” in the party. Nobody says that anymore because he hasn’t accomplished anything as governor,” DPVA Chairwoman Susan Swecker said. “After voters rejected his plan to ban abortion by electing Democrats to take control of the state legislature in 2023, it is clear that Virginians want a change and reject Republican policies that push us back by generations, not move us forward into a brighter future.”

Since Youngkin won’t say any of this in his speech, we want to remind you of his record:

Biden-Harris Campaign: “As Trump’s running mate, Vance will make it his mission to enact Trump’s Project 2025 agenda”

From the Biden for President campaign:

Statement on Donald Trump Announcing J.D. Vance as His Running Mate

Biden-Harris 2024 Chair Jen O’Malley Dillon released the following statement in response to Donald Trump naming J.D. Vance as his running mate:

“Donald Trump picked J.D. Vance as his running mate because Vance will do what Mike Pence wouldn’t on January 6: bend over backwards to enable Trump and his extreme MAGA agenda, even if it means breaking the law and no matter the harm to the American people.

“As Trump’s running mate, Vance will make it his mission to enact Trump’s Project 2025 agenda at the expense of American families. This is someone who supports banning abortion nationwide while criticizing exceptions for rape and incest survivors; railed against the Affordable Care Act , including its protections for millions with preexisting conditions; and has admitted he wouldn’t have certified the free and fair election in 2020.

“Billionaires and corporations are literally rooting for J.D. Vance: they know he and Trump will cut their taxes and send prices skyrocketing for everyone else.

“Over the next three and a half months, we will spend every single day making the case between the two starkly contrasting visions Americans will choose between at the ballot box this November: the Biden-Harris ticket who’s focused on uniting the country, creating opportunity for everyone, and lowering costs; or Trump-Vance – whose harmful agenda will take away Americans’ rights, hurt the middle class, and make life more expensive  – all while benefiting the ultra-rich and greedy corporations.”

Like Trump, J.D. Vance supports a nationwide ban on abortion – and he criticizes exceptions for rape and incest.

  • Like Donald Trump, J.D. Vance supports an abortion ban nationwide
  • Vance opposes exceptions for rape and incest survivors, saying “two wrongs don’t make a right,” and calling those circumstances “inconvenient.”
  • Vance thinks women should stay in “violent” marriages.

J.D. Vance supports Trump’s agenda to cut Social Security and rip away Americans’ health care.

  • Vance railed against the Affordable Care Act, which includes protections for millions of Americans with preexisting conditions.
  • Vance called Social Security and Medicare “the biggest roadblocks to any kind of real fiscal sanity.”

J.D. Vance denies the results of the 2020 election and makes excuses for political violence.

  • J.D. Vance admitted he would not have certified the 2020 election results, and echoes Donald Trump’s baseless lies refusing to accept the results of the 2020 election.
  • Vance has repeatedly attempted to whitewash the political violence that occurred on January 6.
  • Vance has a reputation as one of the most far-right extremists in Washington, endorsing a January 6 rally member for Congress and calling Marjorie Taylor Greene, who trafficks in antisemitism and division, “a friend.”

[UPDATE: Trump Picks JD Vance] Youngkin to Speak This Evening at Republican National Convention; VP Shares Price Increases on PredictIt

26

Interesting:

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin will speak Monday evening at the Republican National Convention in Wisconsin, two people familiar with the plans have told 8News…

…The Richmond Times-Dispatch first reported that Youngkin is set to speak Monday. The RTD reports that Youngkin is Monday’s keynote speaker.”

Also note that Youngkin’s now surging on PredictIt’s VP market – although still far behind JD Vance (who’s at 55 cents) and also behind Doug Burgum (who’s at 23 cents). We’ll see…

P.S. For the record, Youngkin has no business holding ANY public office, let alone VP. He’s an amoral, power-hungry right wingut who will say/do anything if he thinks it will benefit him.

Video: President Biden Says “an assassination attempt is contrary to everything we stand for as a nation,” Argues “nothing is [more] important than [unity] right now”

6

Speaking a few minutes ago, here’s what President Joe Biden had to say:

“Good afternoon. Last night, I spoke with Donald Trump. I’m sincerely grateful that he’s doing well and recovering. And we had a short but good conversation. Jill and I are keeping him and his family in our prayers. We also extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim who was killed. He was a father; he was protecting his family from the bullets that were being fired and he lost his life. God love him.

We’re also planing for the full recovery of those who were injured. And we’re grateful to the Secret Service agents and other law enforcement agencies and individuals who risk their lives literally for our nation. As I said last night, there is no place in America for this kind of violence or any violence for that matter. An assassination attempt is contrary to everything we stand for as a nation – everything. It’s not who we are as a nation. It’s not America and we cannot allow this to happen. Unity is the most elusive goal of all, but nothing is [more] important than that right now – unity. We’ll debate and we’ll disag agree, that’s not going to change, but we’re going to not lose sight in fact who we are as Americans.

Vice President Harris and I were just briefed in the Situation Room by my Homeland Security team, including the Director of the FBI, the Secretary of Homeland Security, the Attorney General, the Director of the Secret Service, my Homeland Security advisor, the National Security advisor. And we’re going to continue to be briefed. The FBI is leading this investigation, which is still in its early stages. We don’t yet have any information about the motive of the shooter. We know who he is. I urge everyone everyone please, don’t make assumptions about his motives or his affiliations. Let the FBI do their job and their partner agencies do their job. I’ve instructed that this investigation be thorough and swift, and the investigators will have every resource they need to get this done.

As this investigation continues, here’s what we’re going to do. First, Mr Trump as a former president and nominee of the Republican Party already receives a heightened level of security. And I’ve been consistent in my direction of the Secret Service to provide him with every resource, capability and protective measure necessary to ensure his continued safety.

Second, I’ve directed the head of the Secret Service to review all security measures  for the Republican National Convention, which is scheduled to start tomorrow.

And third, I’ve directed an independent review of the…security at yesterday’s rally to assess exactly what happened. And we’ll share the results of that independent review with the American people as well.

And finally, I’ll be speaking more about this tonight at greater length from the Oval Office – we must unite as one nation, we must unite as one nation to demonstrate who we are. And so may God bless you all and may God protect our troops. Thank you very much.”

By the way, this is exactly the type of response everyone should WANT from a president. And no, if Trump were president, he would NOT be responding like this.

Virginia Democrats Condemn Political Violence; Sen. Warner Says “I’m monitoring this terrible situation and praying for all those at the Pennsylvania rally”

25

See below for reactions by Virginia leaders to what just happened at the Trump rally in Pennsylvania:

“An incident occurred the evening of July 13 at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania. The Secret Service has implemented protective measures and the former President is safe. This is now an active Secret Service investigation and further information will be released when available”

It should go without saying that political violence is NOT the way we should settle our differences in a democracy.

*******************

Sen. Mark Warner: “There is no place for political violence in a democracy. I’m monitoring this terrible situation and praying for all those at the Pennsylvania rally.”

Sen. Tim Kaine: “I’m deeply concerned by this situation and am praying for President Trump and everyone at today’s event.”

Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA03) – “I unequivocally condemn any form of political violence.”

Rep. Jennifer McClellan (D-VA04): “Violence of any kind is unacceptable. I am sickened by what happened in Pennsylvania today and grateful the former President is safe. I pray for the spectator killed, the injured, and our country in this horrible time.”

Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA07):  “I’m praying for everyone who was at the former president’s rally this evening, and I’m relieved that he is reportedly doing well. Political violence is never acceptable.”

Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA08) –  “As we wait for more information, I’m grateful to law enforcement for their swift response to protect the public. Political violence is totally unacceptable.” –

Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-VA10): “My thoughts are with former President Trump and all those in attendance at his rally this evening. This is a despicable and horrifying act of violence that has no place in our country.”

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA11): “Praying for the safety of everyone in attendance at Donald Trump’s rally. While we await more information, we know that political violence is never acceptable.”

VA Speaker Don Scott: “[VA House GOP Leader] @cToddGilbert and I put out the following statement. In America, we settle our political differences through free and fair elections. We are praying for President Trump.”

VA House Majority Leader Charniele Herring: “Violence is unacceptable & certainly has no place in our political discourse. I am glad to hear reports that President Trump is safe.”

VA Senate President Pro Tem Louise Lucas: “I am disgusted by the events that occurred at former President Trump’s rally today. Political violence has absolutely no place in our democratic systems. I am praying for his family, and for a full recovery for Mr. Trump.”

VA Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell: “Political violence is not how we resolve elections in America – thank you Secret Service and other law enforcement for protecting the Former President and all participants at his rally”

VA State Sen. Aaron Rouse – “Our democracy crumbles when it resorts to violence. Political violence is never acceptable and I strongly condemn it. ”

State Sen. Danica Roem: “Political violence is unequivocally wrong and only leads to more violence, all of which undermines the very essence of representative democracy. We must all condemn it without exception.”

Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney:  “Tonight, our thoughts are with President Trump and his family. No matter what political party you support, tonight, we must come together and unequivocally condemn this heinous act of violence.”

What former Rep. Riggleman (R-VA05) said. As for Ivan Raiklin…uh, no; just no.

MAGA Malarkey: The Extremism You Missed From Republicans This Week

3

From the DNC War Room:

MAGA Malarkey: The Extremism You Missed From Republicans This Week

MAGA Republicans stooped to new lows this week with their extremism, hypocrisy, chaos, and — as President Biden would call it — malarkey. In case you missed it: The RNC’s Platform Committee adopted Donald Trump’s extreme, out-of-touch platform; a group behind Project 2025 is going to sponsor the Republican convention; J.D. Vance praised Project 2025 and said it has “good ideas”; Trump and Marco Rubio are refusing to commit to protecting abortion rights in Florida; Trump said he did a “great service” when he overturned Roe v. Wade, while his MAGA Republicans in the Senate voted against federally protecting reproductive freedom; Trump again called January 6 insurrectionists “hostages”; and Trump tapped convicted fraudster Billy McFarland to join his failing campaign.

The RNC’s Platform Committee adopted Donald Trump’s extreme, out-of-touch platform ahead of the Republican National Convention.

The Cap Times: “GOP approves new platform, written by Trump and passed in private”

NBC Washington: “The Republican party’s 2024 platform reflects a Trump-centric shift in policies”

ABC News: “Trump is trying to distance himself from Project 2025 — but its architects helped shape his RNC party platform”

“But when Republicans meet in Milwaukee next week and vote to officially confirm the first new Republican Party platform since 2016 — which Trump and Republicans across the country will run on — that platform will have been crafted and influenced by individuals with deep ties to Project 2025.

“In May, the Trump campaign and the RNC announced their Platform Committee leadership team, the senior officials tasked with drafting the Republican platform, and named Russ Vought as the platform committee’s policy director and Ed Martin as deputy policy director. Both have ties to Project 2025.

“Other members on the RNC platform committee with ties to Project 2025 include Family Research Council President Tony Perkins, who has been vocal in his efforts to ensure the Republican platform does not soften its language on abortion. Perkins has said he is involved in the crafting of the 2024 platform, and Family Research Council is also an advisory board member to Project 2025.

An organization behind Project 2025 is sponsoring next week’s Republican National Convention as Trump continues trying to hide his deep ties with the group.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: “Think tank behind Project 2025 conservative blueprint signs on as RNC convention sponsor”

“As former President Donald Trump distances himself from a conservative group’s blueprint for a future Republican governing agenda, he will have at least one unavoidable connection to it: the Republican National Convention.

“The Heritage Foundation, the D.C.-based think tank that produced Project 2025 — a series of policy plans to overhaul the federal government — is among the sponsors of the convention in Milwaukee next week.”

Washington Examiner: “Project 2025 Heritage Foundation partners with RNC”

“While former President Donald Trump has attempted to distance himself from Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation, the conservative think tank behind the policy plan, is on full display at the Republican National Convention.”

Newsweek: “Donald Trump’s Claim He Knows ‘Nothing’ About Project 2025 Has One Problem”

“Donald Trump’s statements that he has ‘nothing’ to do with the conservative Project 2025 have received further scrutiny after the think tank behind the policy plan was revealed to be hosting two events at the Republican National Convention.”

Trump VP contender J.D. Vance praised Project 2025 and said it has “good ideas.”

Vance: “I’ve reviewed a lot of [Project 2025]. There are some good ideas in there.”

The New Republic: “On January 20, 2025, conservatives plan to resurrect a 150-year-old defunct law to ban abortion across the nation. This is not a secret plan—far from it. It’s part of the 180-Day Playbook produced by Project 2025, detailing priorities for an incoming conservative president on day one. These 900 pages lay out a Christian nationalist vision of the United States, one in which married heterosexuality is the only valid form of sexual expression and identity; all pregnancies would be carried to term, even if that requires coercion or death; and transgender and gender-nonconforming people do not exist.

“The playbook says the president should enforce a 150-year-old law, the Comstock Act, which right-wing groups see as a way to ban abortion nationally because it outlaws the use of the mail for the purposes of sending or receiving any object that could be used for an abortion.”

Niskanen Center: “[Project 2025’s immigration proposals] are designed to cripple the existing immigration system without regard for the extraordinarily harmful effects on the health and wealth of our country. They would weaken our nation’s prosperity and security and undermine the vitality of our workforce, with far-reaching consequences for future generations of Americans.”

Trump refused to say how he’ll vote on an amendment to overturn Florida’s extreme abortion ban this November — but his MAGA veepstakes contender Marco Rubio has already said he’d vote against it.

NBC Miami: “As an official Florida resident, Trump also tapped on voting, with Amendment 4 — the right to abortion initiative — on the ballot this November.

“‘I won’t say how I’m voting, but I will be announcing it some time prior to the vote,’ he said. ‘But I wanted to make sure the people had the vote.’”

WFTV: “Florida Abortion amendment gets a ‘no’ from Sen. Rubio”

“‘I’m not voting for that amendment,’ said Senator Marco Rubio (R-Florida) in an interview with Eyewitness News…

“Rubio, who in his time in the US Senate has introduced several bills to restrict abortion, is a long-time pro-life advocate, who in 2022, co-sponsored a bill that would ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy nationwide.”

Trump bragged (again) about overturning Roe v. Wade — this time saying he did a “great service” — while his MAGA VP contenders in the Senate voted against codifying protections for abortion access.

Republicans who voted against include: J.D. VanceMarco RubioTim ScottTom CottonBill Hagerty, Katie BrittMarsha BlackburnJoni Ernst, and Mike Lee.

Trump: “If you remember, for 52 years they’ve been trying to get it. So it states it’s in the states, but it got stuck in the federal government with Roe v. Wade. I was able to get that out. That was a great service.”

The Hill: “Senate Republicans block Democratic votes on abortion bills”

“Senate Republicans blocked an attempt by Democrats to pass a series of abortion-related bills Tuesday, as the party seeks to keep a focus on abortion and access to reproductive health care ahead of the November election.”

Raw Story: “Senate Republicans block yet another reproductive rights bill”

NBC News: “Senate Republicans block Democratic bill codifying Roe v. Wade abortion protections”

Trump doubled down on calling January 6 insurrectionists “hostages.”

Trump: “But when people who love our country protest on January 6 in Washington, they become hostages unfairly imprisoned for long periods of time. But fortunately, the Supreme Court has just ruled and they should be out soon.”

Axios: “Trump pledges to free Jan. 6 rioters in early act as president if elected”

Vanity Fair: “Trump Says He’ll ‘Free the January 6 Hostages,’ Who Waged a Deadly Insurrection on His Behalf, in One of His First Acts as President”

“What are Donald Trump’s biggest priorities for his early days in office, should the nightmare in which he wins a second term actually come to pass? Well, aside from being a dictator and presumably getting his Diet Coke button reinstalled, he also wants to free the people who spent January 6, 2021 attacking the US Capitol on his behalf.”

Associated Press: “Trump downplays Jan. 6 on the anniversary of the Capitol siege and calls jailed rioters ‘hostages’”

“Trump also continued to bemoan the treatment of those who have been jailed for participating in the riot, again labeling them ‘hostages.’ […]

“‘They ought to release the J6 hostages. They’ve suffered enough,’ he said in Clinton, in the state’s far east. ‘Release the J6 hostages, Joe. Release ‘em, Joe. You can do it real easy, Joe,’ he said.”

Trump tapped fellow convicted felon Billy McFarland (of Fyre Festival infamy) to join his failing campaign of crooks, cranks, and convicts.
Rolling Stone: “The Fyre Fest Fraudster Is Connecting Trump With Rappers”“So far, McFarland has helped connect rappers with Trump at least twice.

“It’s a fascinating turn of events: Fyre Festival was such an infamous, unmitigated disaster — full of chaos and unfulfilled hype — that the term ‘Fyre Fest’ quickly entered the pop-cultural lexicon as being synonymous with mayhem and catastrophe. Trump’s Justice Department prosecuted McFarland, and in October 2018, he was sentenced to six years in federal prison on two counts of wire fraud. McFarland allegedly used fake documents to deceive investors into putting over $27 million into his Fyre Media Inc. company.”

Karl Frisch Re-Elected Fairfax County School Board Chair; Sandy Anderson Elected Vice Chair

3

See below for a press release from the Fairfax County School Board – congrats to Karl Frisch and Sandy Anderson on their election as chair and vice chair, respectively!

*****************************

The Fairfax County School Board confirmed its leadership for the 2024-25 school year at its July 11 regular meeting. Karl Frisch (Providence District) was re-elected chair, and Sandy Anderson (Springfield District) was elected vice chair.

In addition to the chair and vice chair, members of the School Board, whose terms run until December 31, 2027, include Kyle McDaniel (At-Large), Ryan McElveen (At-Large), Ilryong Moon (At-Large), Rachna Sizemore Heizer (Braddock District), Robyn Lady (Dranesville District), Marcia St. John-Cunning (Franconia District), Melanie Meren (Hunter Mill District), Dr. Ricardy Anderson (Mason District), Mateo Dunne (Mount Vernon District), and Seema Dixit (Sully District).

Karl Frisch“I am grateful for the opportunity to continue serving as chair for another year, working together with parents and staff as we advance the student-centered focus of our strategic plan,” said Chair Frisch. “I remain committed to collaborating with my School Board colleagues as we help ensure our world-class educators can deliver on the promise of excellence, equity, and opportunity so every student can achieve their full, unique, and limitless potential.”

Frisch began his tenure as Providence District representative on January 1, 2020, becoming the school board’s first openly LGBTQIA+ member. Before joining the board, he was a nonprofit executive and public policy specialist. Most recently, he served as executive director of Allied Progress, a consumer watchdog that sought to protect those targeted by predatory lenders and financial scammers. Frisch previously worked as staff for the Committee on Rules in the U.S. House of Representatives, which considers all legislation reported from other policy and fiscal committees.

Prior to serving as chair, Frisch was elected vice chair by his board colleagues. He also served as the board’s state and federal legislative liaisons and as liaison to the City of Fairfax School Board, the Fairfax County Community Criminal Justice Board, and the Career and Technical Education Advisory Committee (CTEAC). A past member of the board’s Audit Committee, he was also a member of and chaired its Public Engagement and Governance committees. Additionally, Frisch was one of the board’s two representatives on the Joint Environmental Task Force (JET) with the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.

The son of an immigrant, Frisch’s father is a Navy veteran and retired union law enforcement officer, and his mother was a waitress. He received a bachelor’s degree with highest distinction from the University of Virginia and lives near Woodson High School with his partner, an FCPS graduate and long-time teacher.

“I am excited to continue working closely with my colleagues in this new role,” said Vice Chair Anderson. “Together with our superintendent, incredible teachers and staff, parents and caregivers, and community organizations committed to our success, we can ensure the very best for all Fairfax County students. I understand the importance of the work we have before us and am committed to doing all I can to help make a positive impact.”

Anderson began her tenure as Springfield District representative on January 1, 2024. A Northern Virginia native, she graduated from Lake Braddock Secondary School before receiving her undergraduate degree in English at George Mason University. During her senior year at Mason, she met her future husband at an ethics conference in New York. Shortly after they both graduated, he started his military career with Anderson by his side. After spending a decade with several moves and deployments, they moved back to Virginia, where her husband finished his military career, and the couple started their family.

For much of their time in the military, Anderson taught college English after earning her master’s degree at the University of North Carolina – Greensboro. After 14 years of teaching across multiple states and platforms, Anderson moved into a position supporting two Department of Defense youth programs focusing on both science, technology, engineering, arts/design, and mathematics (STEAM) education for K-12 students and teenagers at risk of not graduating in their traditional high school environments.

Before her election as vice chair, Anderson chaired the board’s Public Engagement Committee and was a member of its Governance Committee. She also served as the board’s liaison to the City of Fairfax School Board.
