Here’s some video of last night’s Arlington County Democratic Committee (ACDC) Jefferson-Jackson Dinner 2014. Speakers included Representatives Gerry Connolly, Donna Edwards and Xavier Becerra, plus of course Jim Moran. In addition, we were addressed by Arlington County Board nominee Alan Howze and Arlington School Board nominee Barbara Kanninen. Organizers John Grant and Conor Marshall did an excellent job, as the dinner went off very smoothly and successfully. Nice job everybody!

By the way, it was awesome to run into my old Webb for Senate colleague Adrienne Christian, now Donna Edwards’ Chief of Staff, who was introducing 2nd CD Democratic nominee Suzanne Patrick to people at last night’s event. Patrick seems like she has the makings of a fine candidate against the abysmal Rep. Scott Rigell. It was also good talking to Greg Greeley, Mark Levine, Don Beyer, Nancy Van Doren, Kevin Wolf (Barbara Kanninen’s husband), Alan and Pam Howze, Alfonso Lopez, Bob Brink, Alexandria Democratic Committee Chair Clarence Tong, Ben Tribbett, Dave Leichtman, Larry Roberts, Kip Malinosky, Kip’s parents and his girlfriend Erica Jackson, Ingrid and Judith Morroy, and many others.

With that, here’s video of ACDC Chair Kip Malinosky welcoming everyone to the dinner and celebrating the many successes of Arlington Democrats over the past couple years. I’ll post more video in the comments section.

  • The punchline: the Irishman tells the Brit to name every one of the 1,531 people who died in the sinking of the Lusitania. “That’s the sense of fair play Jim and I want to bring to the House of Representatives when we’re dealing with our friends on the other side of the aisle. You need a sense of humor in this business…”

  • Promises to bring a “grassroots, hiking shoes, sharpened pencil sensibility to the job every day.”

  • Says the special election was a “wakeup call,” that he heard the message “loud and clear,” but that he’s “not discouraged,” that he learned from what happened and is ready to dust himself off and fight again. Howze said we need to solve school overcrowding, address the impacts of climate change in Arlington, provide great transportation including “a modern streetcar system that will strengthen our local economy and provide important funding for our schools.”

  • Libby Garvey, who certainly considers herself a Democrat even if she resigned from ACDC, was also not listed as an “Arlington Democratic Elected Official” in the official program. Interesting…

  • Heaps praise on Jim Moran – he says what he means and means what he says, he has the courage of his convictions, etc. The vote that crystallizes who Jim Moran is was when he was one of just 16 Democrats who voted against the “fiscal cliff” deal in January 2013. Becerra ripped that compromise, which is fine but I thought was a bit awkward, as Rep. Gerry Connolly, sitting a few feet away, voted “aye”. Hmmmm.

  • What struck me the most was his deep sense of frustration at how far right the Republican Party has lurched, and how that has prevented our country from making progress on a whole host of issues, including the crucial one of global warming, but also investment in our nation’s future, etc, etc. Moran predicted that the current far-right-wing Republican Party will become an “anachronism,” is “not the future.”

  • Great quality photo by Kevin Wolf!

Vapid … petty … lame … pretty pathetic but in line with what I’ve come to expect after listening to one uninspiring set of cliches and platitudes after another from him since he was elected to the Board.

I mean, really, this is 8th grade stuff, jr. high school level.
